Steve Smith CAR WR breaks arm-may miss some of training camp...

Just in case you have a draft this weekend. Steve Smith seems to have broken his arm playing flag football. His status for the start of training camp is up in the air.

Maybe take him down a few spots in your WR rankings simply because he may not have enough time with Matt Moore in the preseason.

But he is one tough player and should be back playing sooner than most.

RBBC for 17 NFL teams-15 Main RBs in 2010

I mentioned SEA and their RBBC situation a few days ago. After looking closer it seems that as many as 17 NFL teams will have a Running-Back-By-Committee (RBBC) situation.
There are only 15 Main RBs and they make up the Top 20 at RBs.

1. Chris Johnson-TEN
2. Adrian Peterson-MIN
3. MJD-JAX
4 Frank Gore-SF
5 Ray Rice-BAL
6 Michael Turner-ATL
7 Steven Jackson-STL
8 Ryan Grant-GB
9 Rashard Mendenthal-PIT
11 Pierre Thomas-NO
13 Ryan Mathews-SD
14 Cedric Benson-CIN
15 Knowshon Moreno-DEN
17 Jahvid Best-DET
20 L. McCoy-PHI

That leaves 17 RBBC Teams as CLE, DAL, SEA, CAR* (each top 15 RBs), AZ, NYJ, IND, MIA, NYG, CHI, BUF, OAK, WAS, NE, HOU, TB, KC

KC, CHI, AZ and NYJ may have a proven one horse RB but it is too early to tell.

Seattle Seahwaks RB situation needs watching-Jones/Forsett or Leon Washington?

For the record, I am a big Leon Washington fan and think he scores the most FPs in SEA in 2010.
But having said that, it is only fair to warn you that Pete Carroll seems intent to make it a RBBC situation and he hinted recently that Julius Jones and Justin Foresett will fight it out for the top spot.

I wonder why he traded for Leon Washingon then? Me thinks (Scotish accent) the shrewd Carroll is going to use Jones/Forsett as the bruiser and Washington will get the 3rd down passes, and burst part of the running game. We shall see. I would grab whoever is left over later in the draft. I.e if Jones goes first then grab Forsett and Washington afterwards when the price paid is more value oriented. And if both Jones and Forsett are gone and it is late and Washington is still available make him your sleeper RB. Thats the way it is turning out these days.

I love Fantasy Baseball too but having watched the MLB Draft...the NFL Draft is the best!

I love both Fantasy Football and Fantasy Baseball. In fact, in October I have another book coming out. Fantasy Baseball for Beginners ($10.95 Pre Order at 32% off for $7.38-this deal will not last) is for those wanting to learn Fantasy Baseball but not knowing where to start.
Pre Order only at BN here:

or

But I digress...
I watched Bud Selig and the MLB 2010 draft and it reminded me how great the NFL draft really is. There is so much more excitement and passion. I guess that is because you know that all of the players drafted will be fighting for a starting position this year. Instead of going to a minor league farm system and working their way up....next year...after college or gulp High School.

Only 2 more months until the first pre season NFL game.

Why did you pay more for Ryan Grant ($37) than either DeAngelo Williams ($30) or Reggie Wayne ($31) in your recent Experts Auction draft?

Recently I received a comment asking this question.

Why did you pay more for Ryan Grant ($37) than either DeAngelo Williams ($30) or Reggie Wayne ($31) in your Fantasy Index Experts Auction draft?

I replied to the post but also thought it was such a good question that I should make a blog post about it as well. I think many will get a better understanding of auctions and some strategies with this explanation.

Excellent question! You are right my values for each player going into the auction draft were:

De Williams $42
Reggie Wayne $40
Ryan Grant $37

These values are just that pre auction, meaning maximum cost. Once the auction starts I hope to get value by buying players for under cost-thus saving money for others if needed.
As it turns out Ryan Grant came up for bidding first. I got him for market price (IMO) at $37. He was the 23rd player bid. In other words, I passed on winning the first 22 players of the draft.
Note I did still bid on them, but I dropped out of the bidding once they were close to or over their maximum value. Essentially, none of these players were going for under their maximum cost. I avoid the first 20 players as a general rule unless I can get them for under cost.

Reggie Wayne was the 29th player auctioned off. By this time, most teams had spent big money on two players (some had 3 players paid for on their roster and one team had 4). So budgets had thinned and owners had less money to spend (part of my strategy), this resulted in me adding Reggie Wayne for just $31, a $9 savings. Then DeAngleo Williams came up for bidding as the 39th player (with many teams already having 1-2 RBs). Many teams were tapped out (low on money) so I got him for a steal at $30 instead of the $42 I thought he was worth.

Auctions do not always go this well. Rarely are potential Top 10 RBs left until the mid rounds. If they are, any owner with some money can make a steal. But the other side of that coin is if you wait and save your money too long, there may not be players worthy left over.

Bottom line you have to watch the players at key positions and judge when and where to make your move and not wait too long. Before the draft I made a plan to NOT spend more than 20% on any one player. With a $200 budget that meant $40 or less for every player. This strategy keeps me from bidding on the studs, but it also prevents me from overpaying for them too! So I targeted RBs in the bottom half of the Top 10 and the 4th best WR because I thought I could get them for around $40. As it turns out, I got them for much less.

Remember: In an auction often the price paid is based on when in the auction they came up for bid, how much is still left on the table and who has needs at that position. In my opinion, the first 20 or so players are often overbid since every owner has all of his budget burning a hole in his pocket. Stay away from the early players (unless they are value for money) and save some cash for the mid rounds.

NFL announces it will show NFL Redzone at all 32 games

NFL Network announced yesterday (and NFL.com confirms) that "fans attending games for all 32 teams will have the opportunity to see every touchdown from every game via NFL RedZone. The league plans to replace NFL Films highlights normally shown during games with the increasingly popular channel.

Produced by NFL Network, NFL RedZone whips around every NFL game on Sunday afternoons delivering touchdowns and the most exciting moments live and in high definition. When a team goes inside the 20-yard line, fans see the crucial plays as they happen. Host Scott Hanson keeps fans up-to-date in real time, switching from game to game with live look-ins, highlights and a chance to see every important play".

I see this as good for Fantasy Football fans everywhere. Now you can get the extra info without having to bring any electronic listening devices (radio, blackperry, I Phone etc).

Footballguys Players Championship

Here are some of my back of the napkin calculations for the Footballguys Player Championship (which I am playing in and starts 1 Aug 2010)

Footballguys Players Championship (cost to enter $350)

$77,200 in cash prizes overall
$102,500 in league prizes ($2,050 x 50 leagues-based on 600 teams signing up)
------------------------------------
$179,700

$2,250 30 x $75 3 year Subscriptions
$15,000 20 x $ Lifetime subscripions (estimated value 30 years x $25=$750
--------------------------------------------------
$196,950 total paid out if 600 teams play

600 teams=50 leagues = 600 x $350=$210,000 in entry fees

Return on investment for a player

$196,950
------------=93.7%
$210,000

Pretty high considering many online games offered by the High Stakes Leagues are in the 80-88 percentile.

This assmes 600 teams play. Less than that and the ROI goes up. More than that and the FPC has a progressive prize structure. So cash prizes increase...for example if 1200 teams play, the grand prize goes to $75,000 ($129,350 overall cash prizes+$205,000 in league prizes)

Remember due to the carve out language of the 2006 Anti-gambling bill, fantasy sports contests are not considered gambling as long as awards and prizes are announced before the contest starts and are not based on the number of entries or the entrance fees. This places a large burden on the contest because they need to offer attractive prizes but if they do not get enough teams playing they could be underwater (paying out more than they take in or not covering expenses such as advertising, league management, staff salaries, etc)

In many instances this means a contest will announce a grand prize based on a certain number of entries but are then not obligated to increase the prizes based on more entries. They calculate their break even point on teams and then hope it is well over that number so they can make even more money. FPC has gone the extra mile in offering additional prizes for more entries...truly a gutsy move considering they are on the hook for the over $75,000 in overall prizes no matter how few teams sign up.

I wish them all the best and look forward to playing in the FPC a combined FootballGuys.com and FFPC contest.
