Pros vs Joes Draft Results

The Pros vs Joes Mutant Division (Friday 26 July) Draft is complete and my team is below along with comments on what I was or was not thinking.

As a reminder this is a "Draft Master" league in which it is draft and forget-no add/drops, trades or setting of lineups. Thats right it is the ultimate "mulligan" type of league where the computer always picks the players who maximize your team score. No more debating over which QB to start or which flex player could give you the most points. Instead after the games are played, the computer puts in the players to maximize your teams weekly score.

So drafting strategy is a little different from a traditional Head-to-Head (H2H) league. For instance Boom/Bust players are more valuable in this kind of "Draft and go" league because you get their boom games and do not have to suffer through their bust games since another player could replace them thanks to the computer support.

Running Back By Committee (RBBC) approaches are not as big a problem either since the computer can start whichever RB has the hot hand in the week.

So....you can have a higher risk strategy. On the other hand, you also should consider drafting more than one or two players at QB, TE, K and Defense. Why? Well you need help during injuries and bye weeks. If you only have two kickers on your team and one is injured for any length of time, then you could find a reduction in points. I recommend 3 at each of the positions where you start one player (QB, TE, K and Def) and if you need to only have two at a position, then defenses always play (unless on a bye) so you could draft just two there if necessary.

And now on to my team...

QB
Andy Dalton CIN/12 (12.11)
Philip Rivers SD/8     (14.11)
Sam Bradford STL/11 (15.02)

I waited on QB and then pounced on 3 mid range QBs in rounds 12, 14 and 15.
I think these three can give me the same production as a Top 8 QB and his pairings could. Dalton is the rock, a top 12. I expect a bounce back from Rivers and Bradford is ahead this year in his progressions and has more weapons. The 14th is typically where teams get there QB2 in these 26 round drafts-9 went between 13.10 and 15.5-9 of 20 picks!!

RB
Doug Martin TB/5   (1.02)
Alfred Morris WAS/5 (2.11)
MJD Jax/9 (3.02)
R. Mendenahll AZ/9 (6.11)
Jonathan Stewart CAR/4  (11.11)
Justin Forsett JAX/9 (26.11)

Started RB-RB-RB. Martin was a no-brainer when AP went first. Thought Alfred Morris at 23 was a steal and could not believe he fell to me there, but hate that he is on the same bye week as Martin-arg! Week 5 could be a dismal week for me. Glad it is not H2H.  By the time 3.02 came around I decided to go all in and take MJD (he has been Top 10 in 5 of his 7 seasons and this is a contract year). But his training camp shape has me worried. Mendy is a nice RB4 about a round later than I expected. In the FFPC you can start 4 RBs each week (2 RBs and 2 Flex players).
J Stewart is a hope that his ankles are not as bad as they look. People always overestimate news be it good or bad. My hope is that we have all overestimated how bad it could be. I am willing to take a chance in the 11th on him. With my last pick I take a possible handcuff for MJD-he scares me some. So does Denard Robinson but he was already drafted by then.

WR
Hakeem Nicks NYG/9 (4.11)
Antonio Brown PIT/5 (5.02)
Stevie Johnson BUF/12 (7.02)
Anquan Boldin SF/9 (9.02)
Andre Roberts AZ/9   (16.11)
Stephen Hill NYJ/10   (18.11)
Mario Manningham SF/9   (24.11)
Justin Hunter TEN/8 (25.02)

Needed WRs and doubled up on them in the 4th/5th and then 7th and 9th. Four starting WRs all in my top 30. I really like Andre Roberts as an anchor-someone who will be consistent for your team, but again bye week 9. Now I have 3 of my 5 WRs on a bye that week (and two of my top 4 RBs too). Hope my TEs pick up the slack that week.

Stephen Hill-someone has to catch passes on the Jets right?
Manningham-I am just blind to bye week 9.
Justin Hunter-what are the odds Kenny Britt gets hurt or in trouble before the season ends?

TE
Owen Daniels HOU/8 (8.11)
Antonio Gates SD/8 (10.11)
Jermaine Gresham CIN/12 (13.2)

Waited on TEs a rarity here in the FFPC. Remember Tight Ends get 1.5 PPR in their scoring format. Followed up with Gates and Gresham as they were really the only thing left. My TEs are a little long in the tooth but...I like a rebound year for Rivers-Gates and Gresham is being written off too much because of a rookie TE in CIN when I see more two TE sets with Dalton. I hate that two of my TEs have the same bye week but desperate measures require desperate action.

K
Justin Tucker BAL/8 (19.2)
Matt Crosby GB/4     (21.2)
Mike Nugent CIN/12 (23.2)

All I want is three kickers on different bye weeks and who are not in a position battle with anyone. Oh and if they kick in a dome especially in December it would be nice. To do all of these things for three kickers you need to start drafting them in the 19th round. Nugent is a good fit since I expect CIN to score more-Dalton to Gresham anyone?

DEF
PIT/5 (17.02)
MIA/6 (20.11)
SD/8 (22.11)

Reached a little for the Steelers defense but I like them paired with some mid range defenses for great strength of schedule match ups.
Love the PIT-MIA Defense by Committee approach.

Here it is round by round

Andre Johnson or Vincent Jackson in the 3rd instead of MJD and then added DeAngelo Williams in the 7th instead of Steve Johnson.

Only time will tell how I did. I look forward to carrying the Divison trophy over my head as I cash in the first place prize of a FFPC Main Event entry ($1,550).

DM or DE League Tips Part 2

I have drafted in several draft masters drafts this season and decided to share some tips.

8) If you get a big name at QB (Brady, Manning, Brees) get his handcuff too. No other owner will want Jim Sorgi so you can wait and take him with your last pick. This will also mean you have 4 QBs instead of 3. However, the insurance policy is worth it. Or if you are not to happy with your draft picks then you can elect to forgo the insurance of the HC and instead bulk up on the RB or WR position with the last pick.

9) If you get in a bind and have to skip a player from the rule of having three at QB, TE, K and DEF then skip the defense since they will never have an injury to take them out of the lineup.

10) Use discriminators when deciding between players in the same tier. Use bye weeks first then decide if they are a conservative or aggressive pick. A player who is suspended or injury prone is not a good thing for a DM team. Go with players who are hot/cold if paired up with a consistent player as well.

A later bye is another discriminator I use. My philosophy is that I want to get as many points as possible from them before an injury occurs. If he plays for only 5 weeks and one of those was his bye then I only had him for 4 weeks effectively. Now take the same player and the same injury but his bye week is in week 8. I had him for 5 weeks. I also think it is easier to recharge with a later bye week. If you have only played 3 games and then you get a break it does less good then if you have played 8 games and then get a week off.

11) Avoid Kickers and QBs who have job security issues. No reason to pick a QB who may be good IF he starts. If he does not start, you have just shot yourself in the foot. Better to have an average starter than a good clipboard holder.

12) You will have 32 defenses to choose from, kickers, however, are less sure as some are fighting to keep their job. Plan on only 26-28 kickers as really being draftable. So favor kickers over Defenses.

13) Draft a RBs handcuff since this is best ball. The best player automatically gets the start in this format. Grab RBs that are in a RBBC situation to monopolize the scores.
If you can get Ahmad Bradshaw and Vick Ballard then you have cornered the IND RBs no matter who scores.

14) RBs are more consistent with their points (other then the top WRs) so I target RBs early and draft more WRs late and hope that quantity trumps quality.

15) Research the league to determine how many of each position are drafted and when. Know when you need to take your 3rd QB, TE, K and Defense. For example, in the FFPC Action 77’s only about 28 Kickers and Defenses were drafted. So you could afford to wait a little before getting your last one. I would take my 3rd kicker before the 3rd defense simply because there are only about 26-28 reliable kickers and you do not want to take one that may be suspended or hurt or fighting for his job.

16) Do not wait too long to get handcuffs for stud RBs. Remember every other owner will be drafting quite a lot of RBs so chances are good they will take the one you need just as easily.

17) In the FFPC with a 26 player roster I like this team:

- 3 QB/6 RB/8 WR/ 3 TE/ 3 K/3 DEF.

Maybe even 7 RBs and 7 WRs if the RB7 is a needed handcuff. Expect Defenses to go in the 15th round and Kickers to go in rounds 19 and 20. And without a doubt the expanded roster (26 players) means I like the 3 QB, TE, K and Defense play. If I dropped one of those it would be Defense since they cannot be lost to injury.

DraftMaster (DM) or DraftExpert(DE) Strategies/Advice Part 1

I have drafted in several draft masters drafts this season and decided to share some tips.

Tips
1) It is a total points league not H2H so you need to have a different mindset altogether. You always want to have at least two QB, TE, K and Defenses. I suggest three of each but will explain why later. You need two of each because you cannot go to the waiver wire to add free agents on bye weeks. In a Draft Masters or Draft Experts league, it is draft and forget; meaning there are no free agent transactions. What you draft is what you get for the entire season. The format gives you the best score each week based on who is on your roster. Therefore, if you have only one kicker, then the week he is on a bye you will get no kicker points. Always have at least one extra player at each spot to cover for the byes and when injuries occur.

2) Watch the bye weeks. Remember NO adds or drops. Therefore, if you have only two QBs and they are both on the same bye week you have hosed yourself out of QB points one week. Even if you have three QBs and only two are on the same bye week you lose their ability to back up the other one on a down week, when two are out on the same bye week.
You cannot leave points missing like that.

3) Try and get starters used for a flex position all from different bye weeks. This is tough and is not a must just a good to know type thing. In FFPC, you start 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE and 2 flex so that is 7 players starting from those 3 positions. There are 9 bye weeks in 2013 (weeks 4-12). If each of the starters is out on bye on a separate week then you only need one strong replacement to step up each week from your bench to have steady points. If three or more starters are out on the same week that could potentially be a very bad week and reduce your overall points significantly.

4) If the roster size allows it, draft three QBs, TEs, Ks and Defenses. Why? The extra player at each position will give you on average about 30 points above most combinations of QBs, TEs, Ks and Defenses. Try it yourself. Look at the scores for most combinations of players then factor in an additional player from the bottom 25th -32nd. In many cases the extra player is used on the two bye weeks when only one of the combinations of players is available and then on a few more weeks he may be the top player and give you a few points more then you would have had. All in all 4-5 weeks as your top player at that position and giving you 6 more points each of those weeks means 25-30 extra points. Now if you do that at each of the positions (QB, TE, K and Defense) you have just guaranteed yourself another 100-120 points. What have you lost? Four players who were deep sleepers or handcuffs. You lost your RB8 and 9 and WR8 and 9. If you think one of the RBs and WRs at those spots can give you 100 extra points over your starters and backups, then by all means continue to draft them. I prefer easy extra points versus banking on a deep sleeper who will only start if my starters are hurt. I rationalize it that if my RB1 gets hurt and I need help and have to rely on my RB8 or 9, my season is over anyway.

5) Never wait until the last round to draft one of those third QB, TE, K or defenses unless you absolutely know there will be enough for you in the last round. Bottom line is draft all of the third QB, TE, K and Defenses before the last round. Save the last pick for an extra WR sleeper.

6) Look at combos: QB by committee, TE by committee, defense by committee etc. FootballGuys.com always has articles about which combos are best to go with. Look at these articles and plan whom you think you can get and who works best.

7) Look at who is left and how best to draft. If you have three TEs with the same bye week to choose from for your TE2 and another TE with a different bye week, who do you pick? Go with one of the TEs from the same bye because chances are your third TE choices are less likely to be from that bye week now that so many were gone. Basically try and look ahead to which TEs will be left and their bye weeks. Try to draft a player who has a bye week that is not the same as the majority of the players from that position left to draft.

Ask the Expert Question: Which training camp battles are you most interested in?

Which upcoming training camp battle are you most intrigued by, and why?
Let me give you three, one from each of the main FF positions. First the PHI QB battle between Michael Vick and Nick Foles. Whoever wins the keys to the Chip Kelly offense will be a steal in the draft. If it is Vick  my bet is he will not last the entire season ( I also like Matt Barkley but will save that for another week). At STL they have three RBs fighting for the starting role: Daryl Richardson, Zac Stacy and Isaiah Pead. That is the order I expect them to perform. Richardson showed some flash last year and may be rewarded with the starting gig on day one. Whether he can hold it remains to be seen. Finally, who will win the battle for the Pat's WR2. They have a few rookies in Dobson and Boyce and let Donald Jones go this week; so my money is on Julian Edelman. But I am definitely keeping an eye on this battle as a sleeper WR.

ASK THE EXPERTS appears weekly at http://www.fantasyindex.com/ with answers to a new question posted Thursday morning.
