"Ask the Expert" Question: What is your preliminary Top 10 for 2010?

Fantasy Football Index Magazine "Ask the Expert" Question for the Week: What is your preliminary Top 10 for 2010?

No real surprises yet. RBs who are not in a RBBC situation are valuable and dominate the Top 10, along with a few top WRs.

1) Chris Johnson, TEN RB – Best RB on the field today, I could watch him 24/7
2) Adrian Peterson MIN RB – Boom or Bust, especially with fumbles
3) Maurice Jones-Drew JAX RB –1300 yards and 15 TDs what’s not to like?
4) Ray Rice BAL RB - Assuming a PPR league since his 74 receptions help
5) Frank Gore SF RB – SFs workhorse
6) Andre Johnson HOU WR – The top WR hands down
7) Steven Jackson STL RB – Impressed with his work ethic on a terrible Rams team in 09’
8) Ryan Grant GB RB – Surprise, surprise.
9) Reggie Wayne IND WR – May lose some points to the new WRs
10) DeAngelo Williams CAR RB (toss up with Michael Turner ATL RB)

Honorable Mention: Wes Welker NE WR but I want to see how his recovery in the off-season progresses.

Fantasy Football Guidebook takes 2nd place in Fantasy Rankings for TEs and moves to 9th overall in Fantasy Index Experts

James Serra of First Place Sports Software is the winner of the tight ends
portion of the Experts Poll that appeared in Fantasy Football Index
magazine. He is also, at least for now, the overall leader in the
competition.

Fantasy Index Magazine is in the process of grading each of the six positions QB, RB, WR, TE, PK and defenses. Whichever expert amasses the most overall points, using our complex grading system is the overall winner.

At tight end, Serra is the winner, followed by Sam Hendricks (Fantasy
Football Guidebook)
and Alan Satterlee (Dynasty Rogues). Serra¹s key pick,
it appears, was ranking Vernon Davis 14th four spots higher than any other
expert (seven didn¹t even include him in their top 20). Serra also benefited
by being one of the few experts who didn¹t rank Jason Witten first.

In this grading system, every pick counts. The higher you rank a player, the
more he counts towards your score. If you rank a player first, his fantasy
production is multiplied by 20. If you rank him 2nd, it gets multiplied by
19. Ranking him 3rd brings in 18 as the multiplier number and so on.

In the case of Vernon Davis, Serra ranked him 14th. That works out to about
1,047 points (6 x 174.5). If an expert ranked Davis 19th, he would receive
only 339 points for that choice (2 x 174.5).

This grading system isn¹t ideal. The penalty when a player gets injured
might be too severe. And that was the case with some key tight ends this
year both Chris Cooley and Owens Daniels got hurt, gutting some boards.
But it¹s the best system for grading these picks that we could think of.

On the overall board, Serra, Scott Pianowski (Yahoo! Sports) and Chris Liss
(Rotowire.com) are the current leaders.

When the scoring is done for all six positions, the top 11 finishers will
win spots in our Mock Draft league (with the No. 1 finisher getting to
choose where he would like to select). That field should be set in a few
days.

Tight ends are scored on the system of 1 point for every 10 yards and 6
points for touchdowns.

Fantasy Football Guidebook finishes 13th in Fantasy Index Rankings for Kickers

Over the next couple of days, Fantasy Index will score their Experts Poll selections that were made for the magazine. The first is grading the choices at the kicker position.

Christopher Harris of ESPN is the winner in this category, followed by ScottPianowski (Yahoo! Sports) and Chris Liss (Rotowire.com).

Scoring for this competition is far more complex than in a typical fantasy league. Every expert is graded on every pick the higher you rank a player, the more heavily he affects your score.
Nate Kaeding, for example, was the highest scoring kicker with 146 points. If you ranked him as your No. 1 kicker, that choice would have been worth 2,920 points (20 x 146). If you ranked him 2nd, he would be worth 2,774 (19x 146). Ranking him 3rd would be worth 2,628 (18 x 146) and so on. Using that system for all 20 kickers named by each of the 20 experts, Harris was the highest-scoring guy, with 23,302 points. For now, Pianowski is 240points back, and Liss is 402 points behind. Harris key choices, it seems, were ranking David Akers and Ryan Longwell higher than the vast majority of experts. He also didnt include AdamVinatieri on his draft board, which gave him a big boost (since Vinatieri didnt even play for most of the season). Attrition is huge in this scoring format there are no roster moves or fill-in players allowed.

When the scoring is done for all six positions, the top 11 finishers will win spots in our Mock Draft league (with the No. 1 finisher getting to choose where he would like to select). That field should be set in a few days. The Fantasy Index picks arent included in these results. Out of fairness to the competition, they stay in the administrator role. (Most notably, their picks arent locked into the same deadline, which usually is around May 20.)

For kickers, fantasy points are extremely basic no bonuses for longer field goals, and no negative points for misses. The only out-of-the-ordinary points in this category went to Josh Brown, who received 4 points for throwing a touchdown pass on a gadget plays.

RESULTS OF EXPERTS POLL: KICKERS
Points
23302 Christopher Harris

5 Fantasy Football New Years Resolutions

The start of a New Year always seems to make people want to begin anew. Well, the same can happen in Fantasy Football and here are my 5 resolutions for 2010.

1) Play in less leagues-The more leagues you are in the more free agent decisions you need to make on Wed or Friday nights. Also more leagues means more time spent deciding on start/bench decisions etc. My limit is 4 money leagues and the same amount of “Expert”/magazine leagues.
2) I will not drop players after just 1 week of performance. I added Jerome Harrison CLE RB and then proceeded to drop him the next week when it looked as if the coaches hated him. he went on to greatness.
3) I will not forget the 4 PM EST games and injury concerns. See previous blog post about Steven Jackson in week 16. ARGGGGGggggggggg
4) I will have my next fantasy football book out for print by 1 June. Fantasy Football Basics will be a small, inexpensive guide to getting to know how to play fantasy football for the beginner. Perfect for your wife/girlfriend/mistress etc. I have the title and an outline now get to work!
5) Spend more time with my family. Enough said.

5a) Lose 20 pounds-Ok so this one makes it on the list every year.

5) Tom Cable will NOT be the head coach for Oakland
6) The Washington Redskins will finish at or above .500

"Ask the Expert" Question: Who do you think will be the most underrated player in fantasy drafts next season?

Fantasy Football Index Magazine "Ask the Expert" Question for the Week: Who do you think will be the most underrated player in fantasy drafts next season?

I will give you two, one at RB and one at WR. First, Steve Slaton, HOU RB, will be underrated especially if he slims down. He gained weight at the behest of the Texans, so he could “take the pounding” as the main RB. Guess what, the extra weight hurt his performance and he got hurt anyway, never playing a snap after week 12. He can return to form in 2010 and be a top 15 RB if he gets the starting job. His ADP is about RB30 now. Next candidate is Calvin Johnson, DET. He finished 22nd in PPR leagues in the WR category, but many will forget his 2 missed games and the seesaw at QB he went through. Only 2 seasons removed from a top 5 finish, this first round draft pick (#2 Overall) should be a top 10 WR in 2010.

"Ask the Expert" Question: It's early, but who do you think will be the most OVERRATED player in next year's fantasy drafts?

Fantasy Football Index Magazine "Ask the Expert" Question for the Week:

It's early, but who do you think will be the most OVERRATED player in next year's fantasy drafts?

Thomas Jones NYJ RB will be the most overrated player in 2010. Granted, he finished in the top 10 in 2009, but many will forget that the Wahoo gained more carries only because of Leon Washington’s season ending week 7 injury. If you look at the game film, Jones role diminished in the FF playoffs as the Jets kept feeding rookie Shonn Greene more carries. Thomas turns 32 before the 2010 season starts and his 332+ carries (more this weekend) this year will take their toll.

Who is the 2009 Fantasy Football MVP? Rookie of the Year? All Star Team?

As a member of the Fantasy Sports Writers Association (www.FSWA.org) I vote for the Fantasy Football MVP and Rookie of the Year for 2009. An All Star team ballot consisting of a QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs, TE, K , DEF and IDP will also be considered.

Who would you vote for? And Why?

MVP- In the QB category: Peyton Manning, A Rodgers, Drew Brees or even Brett Favre
RB nominees in my mind are Chris Johnson, AP and Ray Rice
WRs-Wes Welker, Reggie Wayne or Andre Johnson
Could a TE win? If so Dallas Clark has to be a candidate.

What about Rookie of the Year 2009 (ROY 2009)?
Percy Harvin MIN WR or Austin Collie IND WR
Chris “Beanie” Wells AZ RB or Knowshon Moreno DEN RB
Or even Hakeem Nicks
Or some other Rookie?

What about an All Star Team?

As we get closer to the voting deadline (18 Jan). I will post my thoughts on who I voted for in each category.

Fantasy Football Tip# 212: Don't be complacent

I can speak from experiecne here. Last week in the Super Bowl of my local league and in week 16, the last week of the Fantasy Football Players Championship (http://www.theffpc.com/) I pulled a bonehead move......

While at a friends house I forgot to check to make sure Steve Jackson would start even though he was listed as Questionable. Lets face it he played the past 3 weeks when Questionable and had not practiced. Well I got complacent since I was out of the top 10 at the FFPC and was 20 point favorites in the local league.

That was the week S Jax did not play. Instead of checking my sources (http://www.footballguys.com/
one of many) 30 minutes before the 4 PM EST game I let myself become distracted because Todd "Probable" Heap, who I considered starting over "Shank
" Visanthcoe, was going off for 2 TDs. Next thing I know it is 4:15 and I check my live stat scoring and do not see any points for S. Jackson.

"That's odd" I say to myself. "No points for Sjax" As I look closer I see Ken Darby getting the carries.
"why is Darby carrying the rock for STL" Awwwwwwww shhhhhhh$%^& " as it dawns on me that I did not do my normal routine this final week and check for injured guys status before the late games.

Long story short-I started a player in both leagues that did not play and scored no points. I had a backup plan for this contingency and yet failed to execute it.

It did not cost me money (But it sure could have). I won the local Super Bowl.
It did cost me a few spots overall in the FFPC as I would have finished 12th instead of 16th overall. Shh%^^^^^^

Why am I bringing up my bonehead moves? So you will not let it happen to you.

FFGuidebook.com finishes 16th out of 228 teams in the Fantasy Football Players Championship (FFPC)

FFGuidebook.cm my FFPC team finished 16th in 2009. Last year, I finished 7th.
That is two consecutive top 20 finishes in the Fantasy Football Players Championship.
I believe I won the regular season total points in both leagues too.
I plan on participating in the FFPC for its third year on Friday Sept 10, 2010 in Las Vegas. See ya there.

Fantasy Football Tip #211: Have a backup plan

Fantasy Football Tips #211: Have a backup plan

What do I mean by a back up plan?

When you make your start/sit decisions you need to factor in health concerns among other things. From this knowledge, if you think a player has any chance of not playing have a plan in case that player comes up lame (not playing). So if a player is questionable or doubtful what will you do if they do not play? The key is to take the games start time into account. For example, Steven Jackson has been questionable for the past few weeks. He misses practice every day, but miraculously plays on Sunday. Well, you still need to have a plan in case he does not play.

What do you do? First, think of who you can start from your bench.
Things to consider
1) Is he the right position? If Steven Jackson is in your RB slot then only a RB can replace him. But if S Jax is a flex player then any flex position can replace him. So I always place a player who I have questions about at the flex position, so that I have more options if I need to bench him and start someone else. In this case I can start another RB, WR or TE.
2) What time is the kickoff for my questionable players’ game? And more importantly what time does any possible replacement play? If Steven Jackson plays in the 4:15 EST game, then all players in the 1 PM game do me no good since they will already be eliminated by virtue of their early start. On the other hand, if the questionable player ( S Jax) plays in the early game (1 PM start) his status should be known at least 30 minutes before game time. The worst case scenario is when the player in question plays on Monday night. In this instance, the only players eligible to replace him will be those also playing on Monday Night.
3) What are the chances he plays? Is there another player later who can replace him?
4) A back up plan is only as good as the execution of it.

"Ask the Expert" Question: If you were drafting a fantasy team for the duration of the NFL playoffs, who should be the top player drafted, and why?

Fantasy Football Index Magazine "Ask the Expert" Question for the Week:

If you were drafting a fantasy team for the duration of the NFL playoffs, who should be the top player drafted, and why?

I started a NFL Playoff contest in my local league ten years ago and many other leagues/operations run this kind of game now. I love the additional fun for the next 4 weeks. I am taking A. Rodgers. He averages 23 points per game (the most of any QB for 2009) and he could easily play four games if GB makes the Super Bowl. GB has a great defense, great WRs and I especially like J. Finley at TE. Ryan Grant is no slouch in the running game (14th in league) and they come in with an eight game win streak if you erase the freakish loss to PIT 37-36 in week 15. Sometimes it is better to go with a player who could play four games (Wild card weekend team) even though he does not score as many points per game.
