$40 Million cost to run NFL every week. Fantasy Football companies losing money due to NFL fiasco

According to Eric Grubman, the NFL's executive VP for Business Operations (in a NFL.com article), it costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $40 million to run the business of the NFL for a week (some neighborhood).

What many are forgetting during this strike (sorry ... "labor dispute" or "lock-out")is that fantasy football companies are taking it in the shorts.

Many of these companies would be selling their products starting now or shortly after the draft. Draft kits, draft boards, FF magazines and premium websites with draft analysis/information/rankings all sell their goods between draft day and the start of the NFL season. FF magazines are particularly hard hit since they go to press about mid to late may in order to get on bookstore shelves by early June/July.

FF online leagues will feel the pinch to some degree as who wants to sign up for a league when there may not be a season and your entire draft can be wrecked by a wacky late free agent season or worse an abbreviated NFL season.

Lets get together NFL and NFLPA and work on this now! Not in mid May. How can anything expect to be ironed out when neither side is talking to the other?

1 Day until the NFL Draft. Carolina Panthers you are on the clock...

Lots of vets departing and only one 1st rounder and a early 3rd rounder.
Looks like John Fox left a sinking ship.

Cam Newton will sell jerseys and fill seats. Can trading down do that? Can waiting for Andrew Luck next year do that?

With the first pick of the 2011 NFL Draft the Carolina Panters select Cam Newton QB Auburn

2 days until the NFL Draft. Denver has four of first 67 overall

The Broncos can trade down if they want. With four picks in the top 67 they can wheel and deal to dominate this draft. John Fox (new HC) will take the D back to a 4-3 which means DL. John Elway is now the man behind the scenes.

Marcell Dareus DT ALA is a great fit for someone starting a 4-3 scheme. Just saying...No need to QB shop with this class. Stay with Orton while Tebow learns to be more accurate for 2012.

Madden NFL 12 Cover battle finals-Michael Vick vs Peyton Hillis-Winner Announced WED 27 April at 4 PM EST on ESPN 2

Peyton Hillis advance to the finals by defeating Aaron Rodgers.
Any chance the cheesehead fans are superstituous and voted for Hillis to avoid Rodgers and GB facing the "Madden Curse"?

ESPN 2 will announce the jinx'd player ( I mean winner) on Wed 27 April at 4 PM EST.

Good luck to both Vick and Hillis.

3 days until NFL Draft. Buffalo has the third overall pick and four of top 100

Two of the first 34 picks means you did not do well last year. 4-12 is what that means. While the remaining QB will tempt them, I think they still have some hope/loyalty to Ryan Fitzpatrick. So QB is out.
I think they would be smart to trade down and get a few more picks since there needs are many.

If they stay at 3rd or in the top 5 or 6 I think there main need is OL and DL.

When does NFL start to cancel games? What is the master plan?

Commissioner Goodell and pretty much everyone in the NFL is tight lipped about when the season/regular season games may be cancelled due to the strike (sorry "Lock Out").

But here are some options I came up with.

1) Play a 16 game season but eliminate the bye weeks-that saves you one week.
2) Eliminate the week off between the Conference Championship games and the Super Bowl. If anyone out there says "But what about the Pro Bowl" you need to take a hard, long look at yourself in the mirror.
3) Move the SB back 1 week. I understand the NFL and the Colts stadium people have this in the contract.
4) Cut the preseason games from 4 to 2. This plays into the owners hands since they are asking for this and a 18 game season. So this action could a be a precursor to the 18 game season in 2013.
5) Cut the season from 16 to 14 games like we used to have back when men were men and ...ok I am dating myself.

There you go. All is not doom and gloom even though neither side is talking until mid May. I guess those FF mags that hit the stores in June are going to be SOL.

Look for Fantasy Football Almanac 2011 in book stores by the end of May!!!!

4 Days until 2011 NFL Draft. Bengals have 3 of first 66 picks including 4th overall

QB QB QB. Repeat after me the Bengals will take a QB.

Needs-QB, RB, any defensive player

The Bengals have to trade Carson Palmer or he says he will retire (thanks Brett now all the old QBs are gonna use this tactic), so they take Blaine Gabbert QB Missouri.

It is a no brainer.

NFL and NFLPA take a month off? Schedule to get together again May 16. I am not making this stuff up.

If you and your boss were talking contract negotiations and he had laid you off and shut down the business would you both really be willing to just break off talks for a month? The NFL and NFLPA are scheduled to resume talks on May 16th. That is a little under one month of a break. YHGTBSM.

I realize the NFL wants the spotlight on the 2011 NFL Draft which starts Thursday 28 April and runs thru Saturday 30 April. And the week before the Draft has some prefunctary run up events. Heck I even predicted the strike (sorry Lock out) might be over by today (23 April) due to the draft and its festivities, but a month break. Where is everyone going? Fort Lauderdale for Spring break?

ARG!

5 days til NFL DRAFT. AZ cardinals have the 5th pick

Ken Wisenhunt cannot say QB fast enough. They need much more than that though. With needs at LB, CB and the OL (Alan Faneca was not the answer) AZ may punt on a rookie QB and pray they can get a vet in free agency. That is where this draft screw the cardinals since with the lockout they do not know the QB situation going into the draft.

I am bettting on 3 Defensive player with their first 3 picks and a FA QB at a later date.

So......they will pick the Aggie
AZ 1.05 Von Miller LB Texas A+M

6 Days until 2011 NFL Draft. Browns have 3 of first 70 picks

Yes that is what a 5-11 record gets you these days. The 6th overall pick.
The Browns need a WR. Although they may be tempted to trade down and let some one else into the QB sweepstake that is developing for Newton and Gabbert.

If they stay with the 6th overall I predict them drafting A.J. Green WR Georgia. Now if they could just find a QB to throw it to him. Colt come on guy!

7 Days until 2011 NFL Draft and SF has 12 picks!

Yes the 49ers have 12 including the 7th overall pick. They have a 1st 1.07 (7), 2nd 2.13 (45th), 3rd 3.12 (76th), two 4th round picks, a fifth rounder, two more 6th round picks and four 7th round picks. Ok so the last 7 picks are in the 5th-7th round and may not be significant. 5 picks in the first four rounds is pretty good. I think new HC Jim Harbaugh (a former NFL QB) will stay with Alex Smith at QB so I do not see them pulling the trigger on that position in the 1st round. The running game is set with Gore and A. Dixon, the WRs are coming along and Vernon Davis is finally paying off. SF, believe it or not, needs defense help. Specifically at corner and LB. Lots of draft picks make it easier to fill these holes. I see Patrick Peterson (LSU) DB as the perfect 1.07 pick for SF.

8 Days until 2011 NFL Draft. Titans have 9 picks including 8th overall

Tennessee has a new HC Mike Munchak, new QB (or at least no Vince Young and Kerry Collins is a little too old in the tooth to stay upright for a complete season) and needs at QB, OL and DL. I think the Titans would love to draft Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert but both will be long gone with the QB needs of other teams ahead of TEN. So dont be surprised if they try and trade up to get either of those two. If not and the stay at 8th I see them taking Nick Fairley, DT Auburn.

9 Days until the 2011 NFL Draft. Dallas Cowboys have 3 picks in top 72, including 9th overall

New HC Jason Garrett (OK so he was a 2010 Interim coach-he led DAL to a 5-3 record in the 2nd half of the season) has to figure out if Dez Bryant will be back (he will) after his jewelry incident. He also needs to work on the 3-4 defense that has let the boys down the past two seasons. Look for Big D to go with a DE or S although any secondary player will work.

I expect the Cowboys to take J.J Watt DE Wis or Robert Quinn DE UNC.

10 Days until NFL Draft and Washington has just 2 of first 143 picks

What is the QB situation in DC? If you thought the Titans were QB mismanagers just look at the Redskins. Donovan McNabb seems on the way out and who does that leave?

I expect GM Bruce Allen to move down in order to get a few more draft picks so I do not see WAS using their 10th overall. But if they did they would be looking for a QB (hint to Dan Snynder-both of the good ones will be gone),WR, CB or LB. The conversion to the 3-4 did not go as planned and Albert "I am an ass" Haynesworth did not do the D any favors.

If WAS uses the 10th Julio Jones WR ALA is a great fit.

NFFC moving to first weekend of NFL season for 2011?

Ok first let me state they are keeping drafts on Labor Day Weekend as usual but they are expanding to include drafts on Friday and Saturday 9 and 10 Sep. The Primetime Main events will occur at 2PM and 6 PM on Friday and 10 AM and 4 PM on Saturday. Wow that is a ton of possible HSF drafts on the first weekend of NFL football, if we have a season.

"Caveat Emptor"-Latin for Buyer Beware, FPA makes announcement on WCOFF

FPA follow up email/statement concerning WCOFF *******************************************
All winners must be paid out before the FPA will support any player depositing funds for 2011. In past conversation, Dustin has stated that the WCOFF books will not be opened to the FPA. That's fine. If that is the stance, then the players are only left with late or non payment of prizes to date and unfortunately left to assume what is true and what isn't. An example of this would be the observation as others have pointed out, that the baseball champion for 2010 was not paid until after baseball money for 2011 came in. Truly speaking, there is only one way to mis-manage a contest and that is, not to have enough funds to pay prize winners. Not one time has there been a confirmation or denial that the Grand Prize winner has been paid. Confirming this and other concerns would set players minds at ease and would reduce player suspicions. For that reason, it is the stance of the FPA that deposits for Football 2011 should never have been accepted until all 2010 requests for payment are paid. The FPA cannot be supportive of the WCOFF any other way, otherwise what is really being supported is the possibility and suspicion that this dilemma is simply passed on to next year's winning players to deal with. The FPA has reached out to Dustin this morning for more information as to the current happenings and what is in store for the future players of the WCOFF. We can only hope that these questions and concerns are treated with more seriousness and resolved quickly.

Background: On March 8, 2011 The Fantasy Players Association (FPA) (http://www.fantasyplayersassociation.com/) placed the World Championship of Fantasy Football (WCOFF) "on the clock" for "failing to pay some of their 2010 football prize winners by the posted deadline". The FPA statement is reposted below: FPA’s Statement: It seems like high-stakes fantasy players just can’t catch a break. Even playing in the biggest contest in the land, issues still arise. We at the FPA are very disappointed to be revisiting this issue in 2011 after the off-season promises for improvement. It is our opinion that their rules already give a very lenient payout date of February 15th, 6 full weeks after the Championship week has concluded. WCOFF has been the premier contest for 9 years now, but will have challenges to remain so in the hearts of the players if payment issues continue to persist. With such vague public responses as to the specific issue causing these delays, one is left only to wonder if this issue is due to paperwork mishaps, incompetency or cash flow, however it appears that if more off the record details are desired, that Dustin and the WCOFF are only a phone call away. The FPA encourages everyone with questions or concerns to contact Dustin or the FPA for more information.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As of today, tax day, April 15th the issue is not resolved. I hope all winners are paid immediately.

I have played in the WCOFF for several years and have never had any problem receiving my winnings. However, I have not played in the WCOFF the past two years due to travel commitments which precluded attending the draft. It seems like the payouts have taken longer and longer in the past few years. This years delay is especially troubling.

In the past when companies have gone bust and not paid players they simply do not pay winners period.

The WCOFF situation appears to be different in that payments are slowly being made to winners, just not in a timely manner.

As with any fantasy sports league you are thinking of entering, you must do your homework and evaluate all issues-rules, set up, commissioner, format, ROI and management. One key step in the evaluation process is to determine if all winners from the previous year(s) were paid. Often the message boards are the first place to find out about these 'red flags". But as with anything, take some of the posts with a grain of salt as there are some who wish to damage a contest with posts that reflect them in an unfavorable light. Bottom line: do your homework!

Caveat Emptor

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In NFL Draft news, the current opinion has the top three picks of 2011 as:

1 Cam Newton QB to CAR

2 Marcell Dareus DT to DEN

3 Von Miller LB to BUF

"Fantasy Baseball for Beginners" is a fine read, well worth considering for those who want to break into the hobby. -April 4, 2011... By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA)

Day 25 of the NFL Lockout...June may be the month we know something.

It's beginning to look alot like June may be the time when we know more about the NFL 2011 season. If so, FF magazines will not be available because they will not risk producing 100's or 1000's of copies and not being able to sell them. Do not worry. FANTASY FOOTBALL ALMANAC 2011 will be out this year!!!!
