More tips revealed on HEADGames radio program

I provided some tips two weeks ago and again last week to Masher (Meegan and the Coach) on their radio show HEADGames (AM 1510, FM 93.7)
Here is a recap of what I said last week in continuation of the previous week:

6) Stockpile RBs and WRs. Most leagues start 2 from each position if not more (some start 3 WRs and other leagues have a flex player or two). So you need to have more RBs and WRs on your roster then any other position and the more you have the better chance you have of hitting on a sleeper. In the later rounds target young players with potential. Look for the 2nd -5th year player who has learned the ropes, matured in a a system and is ready to make the move to the next level or the rookie who could be a breakout. RBs behind old vets who are getting a little old are ideal candidates. Plan on most of these "flyers" not producing but the ones who do (Eddie Royal, Marques Coleston, Victor Cruz, Anquan Boldin, A. J Green) can really lift a team. Drop the busts after week 6 or 7 when they have failed to produce and replace them with other 2nd half potentials.

7) Improve your team through Free Agency. No team is perfect after the draft. Injuries, suspensions, benchings, lack of performance from players will hit every team. Drop players who are not going to perform and add others who can produce. Just do not drop the stud players too early. Anyone drafted in the first 10 rounds of the draft should not be dropped unless they are out of the season due to injury.

8) Carry only 1 kicker and 1 defense (and possibly only 1 TE). This frees roster spots for more RBs and WRs so that you can take some chances later in the draft on sleepers (see Tip 6 above). Why carry an extra K or DEF just to start one week out of the year? Instead drop one of your unproductive sleepers and add an extra kicker that week. Or drop the K altogether and add another. K are a dime a dozen in many scoring formats and the difference between K5 and K15 is not that far off.

9) Handcuff your #1 RB IF his backup is good. Handcuffing is when you draft the backup in case your RB goes down or is suspended or benched. It is like taking out insurance since you give up something (draft a player who is not going to play normally or money in the form of premiums in the insurance analogy) for the protection in case something bad happens (RB1 goes out/accident in the case of insurance). But only handcuff IF the backup RB is probably going to produce good FF points.
APs handcuff of Toby Gerhart or Arian Foster and Ben Tate are GOOD handcuffs. Last year Peyton Hillis and Montario Hardesty were a bad handcuff because Hardesty did not do well when he did play and even he had injury issues too. So handcuff your first RB draft IF his backup is worth it.

What training camp battle are you most interested in follwoing and why?

Which training camp battle are you most interested in following, and why?

SEATTLE. And I really do not have to clarify with any one position because almost every FF spot will be a competition. The biggest will be at RB. Will Marshawn Lynch be suspended and if so, how many games? My guess is 6-8. With a 14 August court date, he could be missing for the first half of the season, in which case, who handles the RB duties? Most are pencilling in Robert Turbin, the rookie RB from Utah State who is said to have a running style similar to Lynch. Kregg Lumpkin and Tyrell Sutton could give him a “run” for his money.  Leon Washington is another deep sleeper I like with the last pick of the draft. Other position battles include Matt Flynn and Tarvaris Jackson at QB and Kellen Winslow and Zach Miller in a lesser struggle for starting TE. SEA is a team in upheaval but whoever wins these battles could be fantasy gold.

Tips provided on the HeadGames radio program last Saturday

1) Don't play favorites or hate your rivals if you want to win! This is fantasy football and to win you cannot restrict yourself to one team's player only or eliminate the other teams in your favorite division just because they are rivals. It does not mean you have to draft them just that they need to be at the right place (value) to be drafted. Say you love Denver and want Peyton Manning. Fine but do not take him in the first four rounds when A Rodgers, Brees, Brady and Newton are going. Instead wait until the 5th round when QBs like Romo and Rivres should be coming off the board and draft him then if you think he is going to recover and go on to a great year (I think so too!). Likewise, do not shun division rival OAK and C Palmer, D McFadden and DHB, D, Moore simply because they play for the Silver and Black. Don;t draft them where they should be, avoid them and pick them up if they are still available a round later. That way you are more than likely to not draft them but if you do it should be at a great value draft wise. Of course, I never downgrade or upgrade any player due to my favorite teams. Why because I want to WIN!

2) Know the rules-Sounds simply, but many league owners do not know all the nuances of their league rules. Most know the basics
-how many rounds is the draft? (# players drafted)
-What are the starters? (Positions and number at each who start for your FF team each week). often this is in terms of QB/RB/WR/TE/K/Team DEF  so 1/2/2/1/1/1. Other leagues start 3 WRs so 1/2/3/1/1/1 and still others add a flex player who can be either a RB, WR or TE (1/2/2/1/1/1+1 Flex (R/W/T)
-What are the scoring rules?
--Is a passing TD worth 4 or 6 Pts
--Are yards given points (typically 1 pt per 10 yds rushing/rec and 20 or 25 yds passing)
--Do receptions get any points (called PPR leagues for Point Per Reception these leagues award 1 Pt per catch to RB, WR and TE. The FFPC awards 1.5 pts to TE per catch

3) Track the draft. You do not have to write players names in on a draft tracker but do track who has taken a QB, TE, K , DEF and who has how many RB and WRs. See my first book Fantasy Football Guidebook for a sample draft tracker and ways to use it. One example is if you have the 10th pick and need a QB but look on your draft tracker and notice that teams 11 and 12 who will draft twice after you in the 7th and 8th rounds already have their QB. Why pick a QB in the 7th when you can wait and get the same one in all likelihood in the 8th round after those teams have picked twice. Grab an extra RB or WR in the 7th and then your QB in the 8th. I see teams not draft smartly all the time (even in the big money leagues) simply because they are not tracking the draft.

4) Know of and avoid injuries, suspensions, holdouts and retired players. You have to make sure that cheat  sheet you use is current. If it came from a magazine or Fantasy Football Almanac 2012 it needs to be updated with the current information right before the draft.

5) Draft safe early and take risks late. Your first 8-9 picks need to be the money makers on your FF team. I.e the starting RBs, WRS, TE and QB plus a strong backup at RB and WR for bye weeks, injuries, bad match ups etc. But one or two of those nine picks will bust or fall prey to injuries or other circumstances. With that in mind you cannot afford to take any risks early because if you do and the risky player fails too that is enough to cripple your team for the season. We do not know what weeks 6-11 will bring but we have a good sense of weeks 1-5 by what condition the players are in before the draft. Do not draft a suspended Marshawn Lynch in the early part of the draft because combined with some other busts your team will not have a chance to recover. Instead to chances late in the draft...on sleepers like.....MORE in ANOTHER BLOG

Ask the Expert Question on FantasyIndex.com: What is the big story for 2012?

Which offseason storyline (Bounty scandal, a particular contract squabble, some free agency development, or pick your own) do you believe is most significant as teams get ready to open camp?

I think the RBs returning from injuries will be the key to this season.  Which ones will recover fully or fail to deliver? The RB rankings are a hospital listing of major players in years past: Adrian Peterson, Jamaal Charles, Darren McFadden, DeMarco Murray, Matt Forte, Fred Jackson, Rashard Mendenhall and Jahvid Best. All of these players with the exception of Mendy could have a shot at the top RB in 2012.
