Ask the Expert: Which backup QB currently playing in the last month do you see with fantasy potential in 2011?

A slew of backup quarterbacks, young and old, have taken the reins over the past month. Which if any of these players (Rex Grossman, John Skelton, Tim Tebow, Jimmy Clausen, or another of your choice) will have fantasy relevance in 2011?

I am not buying the Tim Tebow era in Denver stuff. Kyle Orton has a contract through 2011 and the Broncos could end up with the #1 draft pick as well, so Andrew Luck could be throwing to Brandon Lloyd next year. Instead you have to narrow your choices to QBs with a good chance to start in 2011. Therefore John Skelton and Jimmy Clausen
are the two front runners with Skelton the slight edge in long term potential and Clausen the winner in short term fantasy potential. Whichever team has the best running game should be the key.

FFGuidebook.com Week 15 Results

My week in review:

Down to four major fantasy football leagues with H2H for me this year:

Three are Expert leagues. Two of those Expert leagues are associated with my rankings, projections and mock drafts in Fantasy Football Index magazine and Fantasy Football Pro Forecast magazine. The other is the now annual FFPC Pro's vs Joes Challenge. The Fantasy Index Expert Auction and FFPC Pro's vs Joes are also Draft Masters format so draft and forget.

The other H2H league is my local league where we started the playoffs in week 14

I also have a team in the Fantasy Football Players Championship Main Event, and two in the FootballGuys Players Championship but they are no longer playing H2H. Instead they are in the Toilet League competitions.

Week 15 Results: Wins are in BOLD

Let me just cut to the chase. I lost in every fricking league! Am I bitter that AP was a late scratch to the last game of the week or that Vernon Davis (and SF for that matter) did not seem to show up on Thurs night. Nooooooooooooooo. But I digress.

Fantasy Index Expert Auction-Draft Masters: LOSS 3-8 versus all the other teams this week. Fell to 8th place overall. Out for the season --Ryan Grant, DeAngelo Williams and Anthony Gonzalez is not helping!!!

FFPC Pros vs. Joes League #7 - Charles Jefferson's Z-28's: LOSS went 2-9 ( we play every team each week), Rapid movement in this no transaction league. Dropped to 6th overall.

Fantasy Football Pro Forecast Expert League-Loss in first round of playoffs as #1 Seed with a 11-3 record

Local League: Loss to Cruisers 132-113 as V Davis and an injured Knowshon Moreno torpedoed any hopes of a Championship this year

FFPC Main Event "Clark W. Griswold" Saturday Online League #21: 8-3 (4th overall in H2H and Total Points) Missed playoffs by 3 pts 1550 to 1547. Scored 138 and 3rd in Toilet Bowl competition out of 208 entrants. 23 points off of first place

FPC Satellitte Sunday 09.05.7: 6-5 Scored 188 this week , now 3rd of 1065 teams in Toilet Bowl.

FPC Satellite Tuesday 09.07.10h: 5-6 in Toilet Bowl

Just to add some salt to those wounds IF i had made the playoffs in the FFPC Main Event and FPC I would have made the championship round with both teams and....going into the last week I would be 3rd in the FFPC and 9th at FFPC. Oh well. Easy come easy go

Overall 0-4. For the season, 55-37-1 (.609 Winning percentage)

Fantasy Index Magazine Ask the Expert: What lesser player is a strong candidate to put up above-average numbers in the fantasy playoffs?

What lesser player is a strong candidate to put up above-average numbers in the fantasy playoffs?

At WR I expect Deion Branch, Davone Bess and Earl Bennett to be surprises for the fantasy playoffs. Each has come on recently in games where the opponent is not a top defense. They should produce better than expected points the next 2 weeks. On the RB side, BenJarvus Green-Ellis continues to excel with NE, but getting the right starter in SF between Brian Westbrook or Anthony Dixon could also prove beneficial.

Ask the Expert: Assuming he returns to Philadelphia, how early should Michael Vick be drafted (overall) next season?

I predict 30 passing TDs, 8 INTs, 4400 yards passing; add in another 900 rushing yards and 10 rushing TDs and you have 482 fantasy points. That is 30 points per game. 8+ points more than the other top 3 QBs. Draft him in the latter part of the 1st round after the top 7 or 8 RBs, but no higher due to the higher potential for injury due to his scrambling.

Fantasy Playoff rant for FFGuidebook.com

I know everyone has experienced this feeling but it is still tough.

FFGuidebook.com missed the Fantasy Football Players Championship (FFPC) Main Event playoffs by 3 points!!!!

It is a team that I know had a good chance of winning the $100,000 this year. Here is my starting roster:

Drew Brees, Peyton Hillis, MJD, Darren McFadden, Mike Goodson, Brandon Lloyd, Santonio Holmes, Derrick Mason, Mike Sims Walker, Jason Witten, Bironas/Longwell, New Orleans Def

In the FFPC (http://www.theffpc.com/) 4 of 12 teams make the playoffs.

Seed 1) the team with the best regular season record Chamlian Tigers

Seed 2) the remaining team with the highest point total during the regular season Deep Threat

Seed 3) the remaining team with the best regular season record BossmanReIGN

Seed 4) the remaining team with the highest point total during the regular season The L-Man

Here is my sorrow. I missed the #4 seed by 3.8 points as L-Man took it with 1550.8 vs my 1547.0.

I was 4th in the league in H2H and 5th in Total Points. Arg!

So I do not make the playoffs.

But the following week (week 12) my team scores 191.6 and would have beat any of the playoff teams and won $1500 and advanced to the FFPC League Championship game playing for another $3500 this week and a chance to compete against over 60 other teams for the $100,000 FFPC Championship.

Am I bitter? Heck No! I knew the rules when I paid my money and I just did not get it done to make the playoffs. I needed to win another game or score more points in one of those 11 games.

Woulda coulda shoulda.

The Key to Happiness is good health and a bad memory. LOL

Enjoy the week 13 games

Ask the Expert: Has the production of undrafted fantasy players like Steve Johnson made you more or less likely to focus on WR early in the draft?

A lot of no-name, or at least lightly regarded, wide receivers are having big seasons. Has the production of undrafted fantasy players like Brandon Lloyd and Steve Johnson made you more or less likely to focus on the position in early rounds of drafts next year?

I always advocate in my books that the best draft strategy is to stockpile RBs and WRs early (and often) while waiting on QB. Usually this means drafting something like 4 RBs, 3 WRs and a top TE with the first 8 picks (depending on what falls to you of course). Typically this results in a RB-WR-WR-RB or RB-WR-RB-WR start. You still need to focus on WR early in the draft, but as seen in the numbers mentioned a strong RB base is more important. Why? You can get good WRs and QBs off the waiver wire. But few RBs and top TEs are there.

ASK THE EXPERTS appears weekly at http://www.fantasyindex.com/ with answers to a new question posted Thursday morning.
