Fantasy Index "Ask the Expert" question: Who is one player you'd be looking to "buy low" after week 2?

Always look at what teams he has played. Matt Forte has taken on TEN and CHI, two brutual 3-4 run defenses and his stats are not impressive because of it. In most PPR formats, he has 16 points total. However, his next two games are against SEA and DET. Look for a return to normal for Forte and a great buying opportunity from any owner pulling the trigger prematurely.

Fantasy Football Tip #170 Avoid TMTS (Too Many Teams Syndrome)

Why not play in a number of leagues?
Because the more leagues you play in, the greater the chance of crossover players. Crossover players are players that hurt you in one league (because your opponent has them) and help in another league because you have started them. I hate the feeling when I see that my starting RB is also playing against me in another league. Now you face the nightmare scenario of wanting F. Gore to be shut down in one league and in another rooting for him to have 3 TDs and 150 yards.

There is nothing you can do about this problem except limit the number of leagues you play in.
By limiting the number of leagues you play in you can focus all of your attention on those few leagues. That way you can be very competitive in those leagues. And avoid crossover players.

How many leagues are too many?
I know most will have a local league that they play in. More will also dabble in one of the online leagues or satellite leagues for the bigger championships. So 2-3 is the most I would recommend playing in. I played in 12 in 2007 and regretted some of them. Then in 2008 I played in 15 leagues and fantasy football felt more like a job than the fun hobby it is supposed to be. And, you know what? I have more fun and enjoy the games more when I am in fewer leagues.

This year I am in the Fantasy Football Players Championship (FFPC) Main Event and a satellite league and my local league. I also have two actively managed Expert Leagues in Fantasy Sports Magazine Experts and Draftbook Experts. I also have a few Draft Masters leagues-Pros vs Joes, Fantasy Index Magazine draft masters and a FFPC 77 DM League. And 2 rapid draft leagues too.

So 10 leagues but 3 of those are draft masters (draft and forget) and another 2 are rapid draft fun leagues. So 5 leagues to really focus on and of those 2 are expert leagues and then the local league, FFPC Main Event and FFPC satellite league.

Fantasy Index "Ask the Expert" question: Who is one player you'd be looking to "sell high" after week 1?

There is one easy answer: Brandon Stokley, Denver WR for starters, since his TD and 87 yards receiving were on a fluke, tipped, end of game single pass. But I would also go with Fred Jackson, RB BUF and his 57 yards rushing, 5 for 83 yards receiving and TD. Marshawn Lynch is back in week 4 and should regain the starting role. This will leave Fred in more of a fill-in role although his catches will be valuable in PPR leagues. Overall, sell him now while you can.

Boy it does not get much tougher than this.

Final Roster
Pos Name Bye Team Pick
QB Ben Roethlisberger 8 PIT R11 P8 Comment: I get 20.45 points from Thurs

QB Trent Edwards 9 BUF R13 P8 Comment: Complimentary schedule with Roeth

QB Shaun Hill 6 SF R18 P5 Comment: Quantity over quality at QB a consious choice

RB Steven Jackson 9 STL R1 P8 Comment: Either SJAX or M Turner with this one

RB Chris Johnson 7 TEN R2 P5 Comment: To get with the 17th pick was value

RB Thomas Jones 9 NYJ R5 P8 Comment: With Johson a non factor vs PIT, I needed RB help for Week 1. TJ was best RB on the board in the 5th

RB Larry Johnson 8 KC R6 P5 Comment: I am hopig for good things. If KC can ever get a lead in a game

RB Tim Hightower 4 ARI R10 P5 Comment: If Beanie Wells does not stay healhty (what are the chances) then I have my fifth starting RB.

RB Earnest Graham 8 TB R14 P5 Comment: 14h round-a good enough place on a RBBC sleeper RB.

WR Dwayne Bowe 8 KC R3 P8 Comment: KC will be behind quite alot this year!

WR Wes Welker 8 NE R4 P5 Comment: Maybe too high if this mysterious illness hurts his starts. Week 1 is questionable so does not look good already.

WR Jerricho Cotchery 9 NYJ R7 P8 Comment: I wanted him in the 6th but took a chance and got him in the 7th. I expect big things now that he is #1.

WR Laveranues Coles 8 CIN R9 P8 Comment: Debated Coles or Lendale White at RB as handcuff to C Johnson and a good RB in general. I hope I do not regret this decison too.

WR Nate Burleson 7 SEA R12 P5 Comment: Sleeper
WR Jeremy Maclin 4 PHI R15 P8 Comment: Upside is huge especially with K Curtis still recovering from injuries.

WR Troy Williamson 7 JAX R17 P8 Comment: Looks to be the JAX WR#2. If Garrard can return to 2007 form. He is a hit.

TE Visanthe Shiancoe 9 MIN R8 P5 Comment: Could have had S Moss here too. I have some regrets now that I did not shore up WRs. But Shiancoe could be Top 5 WR

TE Todd Heap 7 BAL R16 P5 Comment: Another bounce back bet if he can stay healthy. It looks as if LJ Smith will not be a threat

K Nick Folk 6 DAL R19 P8 Comment: Best Kicker left in a dome and with bye week other than who I wanted to pick next at defense

DEF Arizona Cardinals 4 ARI R20 P5 Comment: Great Fantasy Playoff Schedule in weeks 14-16 with SF, DET and STL. Does it get any easier?

Fantasy Index "Ask the Expert" Question: Which player who you were high on at the start of the preseason have you now given up on?

Never say never. I have not given up on anyone this year (except Plaxico Buress), but I have lowered my expectations on some players. In the May release of Fantasy Football Almanac 2009 I suggested that Cedric Peerman, RB might be “worth a late round chance”. Saturday BAL cut him, but another team may pick him up. Nevertheless, Brandon Marshall is the player that dropped the most. In May, I had him as high as fourth best WR. Now he will be lucky to make the Top 30 at WR. Neither Peerman nor Marshall are avoid players, they just have moved considerably down the rankings.

Kicker Rankings for 2009-Fantasy Football start inches closer

As usual the tiers are placed in divided by dashed lines---------- so that you can see where players of the same value are located. Kickers in Bold play home games in Domes. Scoring/rankings are based on 3 points for FGs under 30. For every FG over 30, the points are based on 10% of the distance. So a 43 yarder=4.3 points. XPs are 1 point.

Note: The last 6 kickers are questionable due to suspensions, injuries or job insecurity

Sleepers players-Who will be the 2009 Fantasy Football Sleepers?

Time to look at who could be significant Sleeper candidates in 2009. Remember by definition sleeper is someone who is not expected to do well and far exceeds their expectations. So sometimes it will depend on what the "expected stats" are to begin with that determines how much they exceed them. In other words it is easy to exceed low expectations.

If anyone tells you that they know who the Sleepers will be for sure, ignore them completely because nobody knows with certainty who will shine. But I can offer a few possibilites and why:

QB
Trent Edwards, BUF-Any QB throwing to two Top 30 WRs deserves consideration for Top 10 performance. On most rankings he is 17th.

Kyle Orton, DEN-If (this is a big IF) Marshall plays nice, then Orton has two Top 30 WRs and a decent TE option in Scheffler. He is projected at QB18 now. That is a lot of room for improvement.

RB
Cedric Benson, CIN-Had a good finish to 2008 and could keep it going if he can fend off Bernard Scott who looks to be pushing him. Either are good candidates for Sleeper.

Ahmad Bradshaw, NYG-The #2 at the Giants will be more of a RBBC then most. Current ranking is around 40ish. But an injury to Jacobs pushes Bradshaw into the Top 15 and if not he could be top 30 even in a time-share.
WR
Nate Burleson, SEA-A healthy Hassleback and TJH to watch by the better corners means Burleson may have some good looks this year.

Chris Henry would get the other nod but he is screaming up the rankings so people are aware of him based on his preseason performance. Instead I will pick James Jones GB. He and GB look to have a great season ahead as A. Rodgers starts his first week 1 without a huge cloud called Favre overhead.

TE
Brent Celek, PHI-McNabb (and or Vick) will take advantage of having a healthy TE permanently on the field.

Brandon Pettigrew, DET-Rookies usually do not see the field much their first year, but DET is desperate. Expect bigger things from Pettigrew especially if he gets Stafford to start with them as Stafford-Pettigrew may become a household phrase in the Big D.

K
Vinateri, IND-IND will not be as good this year in terms of offensive production, Peyton has been sacked way too many times this preseason. So look for more FGs and less TDs. Adam is ranked conservatively at K15. He makes a nice choice for Top 5.

Shayne Graham, CIN- Ranked K17 in many polls if the Bengals have a healthy Palmer look for more scoring. Their Def was not as bad last year as everyone thinks.

Defense/ST
Green Bay-Switched to the 3-4 and the offense looks to be clicking on all cylinders too.

Arizona-They have an easy Fantasy Playoff stretch, as they face @SF, @DET and STL in weeks 14-16.

Fantasy Football Draft Tip #207 from Fantasy Football Tips

Tip # 207 Do not forget PPR.
Having PPR scoring really affects the 3rd-5th rounds. You must have a decent middle WR from these rounds or else your WRs will be too far behind to make a run at the championship. DO NOT GO RB-RB-RB_RB as your start in a PPR league that only starts 2 RBs and 1 Flex. As this means your WR with the 5th pick will be too far behind to give you team any help.

You need to target WRs in the middle rounds (3-5) to balance your team.

If in the FFPC where you start 2 RBs and 2 Flex Positions, then maybe starting the draft with 4 RBs could payoff. But ultimately you will need to come up with 2 starting WRs every week from your late foray into the WR ranks.

Fantasy Football Players Championship Satellite Team

Here is my team from a recent Fantasy Football Players Championship (FFPC) satellite classic draft.

The rules in FFPC are: 20 man rosters, start 1 QB/2 RB/2 WR/1 TE/1 K/1 DEF and 2 Flex players (R/W/T). It is PPR but the TE gets 1.5 points per reception (PPR) and everyone else only gets 1 point. So lets look at my team from the #2 draft spot.

QB
Palmer Cin 8
Rothlisberger PIT 8
Bulger STL 9

RB
MJD Jax 7
Brian Westbrook Phi 4
Thomas Jones NYJ 9
Cedric Benson CIN 8
Kevin Faulk NE 8
Peyton Hillis DEN 7

WR
Wes Welker NE 8
OchoCino CIN 8
Cotchery NYJ 9
Michael Jenkins ATL 4
M Muhammed CAR 4
R Mechaem NO 5
Heyward-Bey OAK 9

TE
Chris Cooley WAS 8
Jeremy Shockey NO 5

K
Neil Rackers AZ 4

DEF/ST
Green Bay 5

Analysis: Ok Strong at RB to get MJD and BW in the first two rounds. Thats right B Westbrook fell to me at 2.11. QB is a little weak and I realized I had bye week issues so I drafted Bulger as the Week 8 replacement and he has a great FF Playoff schedule so who knows.
TE is solid with Cooley and Shockey if he stays healthy could even be a Flex on occassion-remember 1.5 pts per reception.

Fantasy Index "Ask the Expert": Who will be this years breakout fantasy star?

Fantasy Index "Ask the Expert" Question: Who will be 2009's breakout fantasy star?
Breakout player of 2009 will be Chris Henry WR CIN. Carson Palmers return should help all the Bengal WRs and Henry seems to have straightened out his off-the-field issues. His past two years have been failures, but 2009 could be the year he breaks out and surpasses his 2006 performance. Through 3 games this preseason, he has all (3) of the CIN TD receptions. Look for 60 catches/750 yards and 6 TDs and a Top 25 WR finish.

Don't miss out on the World Championship of Fantasy Football 2009

Ready to try the next level of Fantasy Football?
Have you dominated your local FF leagues or YAHOO/ESPN/CBSSPORTS leagues?

-Feel like you are one of the best but in a little pond with no competition.
-Tired of beating teams that give up after they lose a few games? Think about a High Stakes League.

The World Championship of Fantasy Football (WCOFF), http://www.wcoff.com/
offers the chance to play with other dedicated fantasy football enthusiasts competing for a $300,000 grand prize. That's right Three Hundred Thousand Dollars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And League prizes total over $10,000.

I have played WCOFF in the past and have a .725 W/L record in that competition.
The Main Event is held in Las Vegas on Friday 11 Sep or Sat 12 Sep. Other drafts occur in Atlantic City, NJ, Orlando, FL or Dallas, TX so you have 4 great cities to try your luck at Fantasy Football to be named World Champion.

If you care to try, mention code “Slam” and get $100 off your entry fee.
Good luck!

Draft Analysis from Local Keeper League

I drafted in my local league this Saturday. It is a minimal Keeper League where you can keep two players from the previous year if you held them the entire year and then only if you pay a 4 round “keeper” penalty. Only players drafted in the 9th round or later are eligible for Keeper status. Once a player is kept he can be kept until the 1st round but then the following year cannot be kept.

So essentially it is a small keeper league where having the foresight to draft potentially great players pays off in the long run. I drafted Chris Johnson and Steve Slaton last year in the 15th and 17th rounds, so I am keeping them and give up a 11th and 13th round pick to do so.

It is a PPR league with fairly standard scoring (4 pts PTD, 6 pts Ru/Rec TD, 1 pt per 10 Ru/Rec Yards/20 Pa Yds, 1 PPR). The starters are 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 Kicker, 1 DEF/ST and 1 Flex (Either RB/WR/TE).

However, in order to keep the draft easier for new owners we have mandatory roster requirements for the main draft (2 QB/3RB/3WR/2TE/2K/2DEF/ST) and then have a supplemental draft where any owner can get 4 additional players at any position. So the Main Draft is 14 rounds and you have to have 2 QB/3RB/3WR/2TE/2K/ and 2 DEF/ST at the end.

Here is my team and some thoughts:

1 (4) Steven Jackson-With my 2 Keeper RBs I have 3 RBs in top 10.
2 (25) Steve Smith-Best WR left on the board
3 (32) Jason Witten-Best TE in league, all the top WRs were gone
4 (53) Chad Ochocinco-Like his upside
5 (60) Eddie Royal-My third and final WR in this format, huge upside w Marshal
6 (81) Carson Palmer-Most of the good QBs are gone, since 13 RBs were kept
7 (88) Matt Hasselbach-Love his complimentary schedule with Palmer
8 (109) San Diego-MIN and PIT gone so went with next best, Merriman returns!
9 (116) Jeremy Shockey-Another player with potential if healthy
10 (137) Lawrence Tynes-Not getting love in rankings but kicks for NYG, come on
11 (144) Chris Johnson (Keeper from 15th in 2008)
12 (165) Arizona-Good Fantasy Playoff schedule
13 (172) Steve Slaton (Keeper from 17th in 2008)
14 (193) Ryan Succop-Just wanted to have a player called Suck Up.
-----------End of Main Draft----------------------------------------------
Supplemental Draft
15 (200) Lesean McCoy-Keeper potential in 2010
16 (221) Chris Henry-I Like him to be Top 30 WR in 2009
17 (228) Michael Bush-Lots of upside
18 (249) Nate Burleson-Best WR left

Crabtree is last 1st rounder unsigned

Michael Crabtree is the last unsigned first round draft pick. Rumor has it that he and SF are still a long way apart on the contract. The #10 pick could have been a great rookie with whichever QB emerged at the 49ers. It looks as if Shaun Hill is that QB as he has been named the starter for week 1.

Crabtree is rapidly falling down everyones WR rankings. I have him at 69 in a PPR league now but if he does not sign soon then he may not even be draft-worthy unless in a Keeper league.
