Sam Hendricks (FFGuidebook.com) finished 5th out of 50 Experts in Week 7

Following up my week 2 2nd place finish and week 5... 4th place (out of 50 Experts)  finish I finished 5th in week 7 out of 50 Experts in the 411Fantasy.com contest.

"Last week’s co-winner is also this week’s record breaker. Paul Greco of Fantasy Pros 911 sought new heights with a score of 28 points in what was a remarkable week for just the majority of the field     ... Jake Ciely (RotoExpers) maintained his Top 5 momentum with 24. He was tied with Jody Smith (Gridiron Experts), who jumped from 12th to 4th, and Andrew Fiorentino (RotoWire). Firoentino was one of just two experts to name all Top 5 QBs and collect seven points right off the bat. That also might be a first that occurred twice in one week. Also accomplishing this was 411’s Adam Helbling, who notched 23 points.

With 21 points were Jamey Eisenberg (CBS Sportsline) and Sam Hendricks (FF Guidebook)."from http://www.411fantasy.com/

I must be doing something terribly wrong in the other weeks because I am not showing up in the top 25 after 3 top 5 finishes in 7 weeks. I may have submitted one of those bad weeks late as I did not realize it was a noon deadline. I hoped that was noon CST. But never checked back to see if it was a good form. Time will tell.

Note the Draft Masters leagues are draft and forget with no trades/adds or drops. The computer optimizes your lineup each week. So it is essentially a draft and forget league with no options to correct for injuries or status changes.

Experts League Outcomes 4-1

Overall out of 11 leagues 8-3 (overall 45-31-1)

Conclusion: I have said it throughout my FF career. I play better in leagues where luck is less and more skill is utilized. I play better in leagues with PPR, flex players (2 better than 1) and where active management is required (i.e add/drops allowed and the owner has to set a lineup-as opposed to DraftMaster leagues where no lineup is submitted. Historically I do better where my skills can be used to add better players and I think I do a better job at start/sit decisions than most.

Ask the Expert: What's the worst player you've used in a starting lineup this season, and how did it turn out?

Injuries and bye weeks have left fantasy teams with some desperate plays to fill lineups. What's the worst player you've used in a starting lineup this season, and how did it turn out?

Actually I have been pretty lucky on the injury front. Lost Andre Johnson and now Santana Moss but not too bad so far considering... My worst starter may well be Joseph Addai this week. I happened to be in Europe and thus the SNF game kickoff happened at 1:30 AM. I had both Addai and Delone Carter. I waited and watched until gametime and ultimately started Addai only to watch him play a few snaps before calling it a night and changing into street clothes.

Fantasy Football Tip #217 Start to pickup your handcuff now that bye weeks are forcing teams to drop players

Week 8 and if your league only has an 11 game season (many 12 team leagues do this), then now is the time to start to think about adding the handcuff for your #1 RB. Many of your opponents have dropped players due to the bye week crunch. Look for your handcuff and add him now before the playoffs 1) if he will be just as good as your stud RB should he fall injured or 2) if your stud RB is injury prone or has shown some minor injuries the past few weeks. Do not add the handcuff if it means dropping a starting RB; only if you have roster space to spare. Think of it as insurance against a catastrophic loss to your #1 or #2 draft pick!

Facebook page dedicated to Wives of Fantasy Football and Jimmy Kimmel's joke.

TheWivesofFantasyFootball is a facebook page dedicated to in there words " if you can't beat them, cheer them on".

Mission
Helping wives not just "get though" the season, but become your man's biggest fan!

Actually it seems like a pretty nice set up. There is a contest to find the #1 wife of fantasy football (with a $100 gift card to a lingerie store for the winner). They were interviewed on The Early Show at CBS
http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10150786852725274

and even Jimmy Kimmel gave it a shout out on his show. Actually he made a joke out of it but Ayala the wife is taking it in stride.

The kimmel skit has a bleeped out word in it so be warned before hand.

Ask the Expert: Which new QB starter in week 7 has the most fantays relevance?

Several backup quarterbacks are likely to become starters soon -- some in Week 7, some probably not long after that. Which one of these soon-to-be-starters do you think will have the most fantasy relevance, and why?

With reference to the backup quarterbacks soon to be starters, to quote a famous movie, "the list is long, but distinguished".

Recap: Carson Palmer, Tim Tebow, John Beck, Christian Ponder, Charlie Whitehurst and just for fun lets include Matt Moore who started in week 6 and A.J. Feely who will start this week for Sam Bradford by all indications. Feely and Whitehurst are temporary QBs, not long term starters. Ponder and Moore are about equal-good guys on bad teams. Beck and Palmer have some potential , but lack chemistry with their receiving weapons. Winner by a large margin is Tebow. Look for 2000 yards passing, 15 TDs and as many INTs. Add to that 500 yards rushing and 5 rushing TDs and you have 200 fantasy points in most standard 4 pt per pass TD leagues. If Tebow is not available (and he shouldn't be), grab Palmer since he will not be looking over his shoulder like John Beck will.

Week 6 assessment of fantasy football teams is needed

Bye week blues due to AZ, SEA, TEN, SD, DEN and KC got you down?

Shoot for atleast 4-2 after week 6. But don't let a poor start get you down. Check the rules to see how playoff spots are allocated. Perhaps it is best record and then most points, then next best H2H and then next best points scored. My point is there are some leagues where my teams start off slow even though they are good teams. Bad breaks with Arian Foster or Andre Johnson or R Mendenhall can get you down but do not give up the ship. Keep fighting on. In several leagues I am 2-3 or 1-4 but in the top 5 in points scored. That usually is a good indicator of things to come. I may have played the best teams early or gotten "unlucky" but things can change quickly. Especially with the bye weeks upon us.

Week 6 Waiver Wire/Pickups

Bye week blues due to AZ, SEA, TEN, SD, DEN and KC means good QBs like...P Rivers will need to be benched. As far as RBs ok maybe Chris Johnson not to many others. OK all of these teams are a little weak in the FF production. Shout out to Dwyane Bowe who has had the best start of his career and is the excpetion to the rule.

Who should you add as a LT or ST pick up?
First of all, remember this is for good leagues with 12 or more teams and fairly deep rosters of 20 or more players. So no obvious good players are left. They will be listed in order I like them...

QB: Alex Smith (may still be out there), D McNabb (ST), Matt Cassel (LT as he is on Bye), Curtis Painter if desperate Matt Moore, B Gabbert, Charlie Whitehurst may start week 7 and same for Christian Ponder-MIN

RB: Jackie Battle should be gone (LT on a bye), Delone Carter/Donald Brown, Earnest Graham/K Lumpkin, J Rodgers ATL, Ricky Williams, John Kuhn (ST), J Dwyer (ST)

WR: Jason Hill, Michael Jenkins, Brandon Gibson, Damien Williams TEN, L Naanee CAR, Ben Oamanu LT (Bye this week), Brandon LeFell, Jeremy Kerley NYJ (replaces Mason as WR3), Roy Williams LT, Steve Smith PHI LT, Mike Williams SEA sleeper if he comes back

TE: Jared Cook should be gone if not GRAB HIM, Jake Ballard if avail LT, Evan Moore, J Dressen (ST), A Fassano, Clay Harbor (ST), Dennis Pitta (Love his last name), Kellen Davis (ST)

DEF: WAS,

Ask the Expert Question: If you could own one of the NFL's current BACKUP running backs the rest of the way, which one would it be, and why?

If you could own one of the NFL's current BACKUP running backs the rest of the way, which one would it be, and why?

Trick question because there are a few “backup” RBs who are just about starters in my book. Jonathan Stewart in CAR has to top the list even though DeAngelo Williams is supposed to be the starting RB. Tim Hightower in WAS may be the #2 back behind Ryan Torrain but if I know anything about Shanahan it is that he changes his mind about RBs more than Lady Gaga changes clothes. Mark Ingram/Darren Sproles is another case. You pick who is the “starter” and I will take the other person in a NY minute. Now if you want to go legitimate sleeper it comes down to Steven Ridley or Delone Carter and I have been touting Carter all season long. He has not proven me right yet but with the hammy to Addai he will get his 2 week audition and I think he can make the most of it.

Fantasy Football Tip #216 Take advantage of your leagues drops especially around week 5 and the byes

After 5 weeks, it is time to really evaluate who you have, what you have and where you need to improve. Some of those studs at the draft have faltered due to injuries  (Peyton Manning, Andre Johnson anyone) or just loss of a job (Tim Hightower possibly). Others who were under the radar have popped up as studs (Cam Newton, Fred Jackson, Eric Decker, Rob Gronkowski, John Kasay, SF DEF). Some players have been dropped by other teams in your league that are valuable additions. Start by looking at who the top teams in your league have dropped recently. You are more likely to find good players dropped from good teams then find good players dropped from bad teams. Although the later the season progresses the less this phenomenon is seen. Generally, towards week 8 and onwards drastic measures are needed by bad teams to have any success and therefore they may have to give up hope on a potentially good player.

Look at the free agents available by position. Some will be one week wonders with big scores in one of those four or five weeks but little else to show. Others will be slowly progressing toward a productive season. Seek out those who have improved or who you have reason to believe can improve.

Why do good players get dropped? Sometimes it is a slow start (DeAngelo Williams CAR RB, Reggie Bush MIA). Sometimes it could be a lingering injury (Braylon Edwards, Lee Evans, Earl Bennett) or a young gun who has jumped in front of the vet (Chris Cooley supplanted by Fred Davis?). In any case, now after the first bye week is the time to start looking for those hidden gems in the free agent bin.

Players available now in some leagues:

QB Sam Bradford, Jason Campbell
RB Ryan Torrain (ok not after last weeks pickups but you get my drift),
WR Brian Hartline, Preston Parker, DHB
TE Evan Moore, Ben Watson, Jeremey Shockey, V Shinacothe
K Dan Bailey DAL
DEF SF, TEN, WAS, NYG, NE

Ask the Expert Question: Which preseason favorite will continue their downward spiral?

Several preseason favorites (Eagles, Cowboys, Jets, pick your own) struggled in the season's first month. Which of these teams will continue its downward spiral -- and take some of its biggest fantasy performers down with it?

Excluding the obvious favorite-turned-nightmare team IND, then next in line has to be PIT. Their terrible offensive line (injuries are killing them) will continue to be a problem for the entire year. Injuries to Big Ben and Mendenhall in week 4 will not help (OK maybe I. Redman is an improvement to the side stepping Mendy). Even an easy schedule may not be enough to get the Steelers back in the playoffs, much less the big dance. You may be able to gather some fantasy relevant points by playing the matchups, but of the big five disappointments from the favorites, Pittsburgh is most likely to continue to disappoint.

Week 5 Waiver Wire Wannabees-Who to Add and Who to drop

First remember that Week 5 starts the bye week debacle. So who is out this week?
BAL, CLE, DAL, MIA, STL and WAS all get a week off to watch the competition. And in DAL and MIA's case to heal.

OUT in Week 5
QB: Flacco, McCoy, Romo, Henne/Matt Moore?, Sam Bradford and Rex Grossman (who almost looked like bad rex this week-is Halloween that close?)
RB: Ray Rice, Peyton Hillis, Felix Jones, the MIA RB dejour, Steven Jackson (just as he gets healthy) and the new Redskin RB Ryan Torrain
WR: A Boldin, T Smith (not so hot in Week 4 but they tried to get him the touches), no CLE WRs worth caring about, M Austin (should be back Wk 6), Dez Bryant and L Robinson (remember him from STL), Brandon Marshall, any STL WR?, Santana Moss
TE: Ed Dickson, Jason Witten, Fred Davis

Who is good to pick up to start for this week? Leaving the obvious startes off this is a list of some who may be on the waiver wire and added as a stop gap measure.
QB: Donovan McNabb has a decent matchup vs AZ if you can stomach that he might be pulled, Alex Smith, Kyle Orton and Curtis Painter too
RB: Isaac Redman (PIT), Darren Sproles (may be back on WW), Ryan Torrain WAS (even though he is on a bye), Steven Ridley (NE), LT, Earnest Graham
WR: Jacoby Jones/Kevin Walter should see more balls with Andre Johnson out (possibly 3 weeks), Percy Harvin if available, Antonio Brown if Charlie Batch plays for Ben, Michael Crabtree, Steve Breaston and DHB are all better plays this week and should be on the WW
TE: Todd Heap (KC), and Visanthe Shiancoe
K: Ryan Longwell (yes Vikes come on in Week 5), Olindo Mare (CAR)
DEF: KC, CIN and IND

Who is good to pick up for long term

QB: Jason Campbell is still out there in some leagues, Matt Moore MIA if desperate for a week 6 possible starter,
RB: Ryan Torrain WAS, Isaac Redman (if available-doubt it), Tashard Choice, Keiland Williams GL vulture,
WR: Jacoby Jones/Kevin Walter should see more balls with Andre Johnson out (possibly 3 weeks), Steve Breaston, Laurent Robinson but may be sqeezed out when Miles Austin returns in week 6, Donnie Avery sleeper
TE: Ben Watson (CLE), Heath Miller (PIT), James Casey (HOU) (may be in RB section since he is a FB too)

Fantasy Football Tip #215: Use bye weeks to block opponents waiver moves

Fantasy Football Tip #215 simply adding to the 201 tips already in the book Fantasy Football Tips by Sam Hendricks.
If you have played the last 4 weeks on auto-pilot (not looking too closely at your opponent) now is the time to start focusing on his roster and his weaknesses! Starting this week (5) some teams will be on a bye. This week BAL, CLE, DAL, MIA, STL and WAS are all off. In fact, for the next 4 weeks (5-8) 6 teams will be on a bye each week. Then in week 9 and 11 only 4 teams are off. Yes, week 10 is a full schedule. Why do you care? Because your weekly opponent may have some holes in his lineup due to those byes (combined with some inconvenient injuries) and you can exploit that with the waiver wire if needed. If he is short a kicker or defense you probably cannot do much to prevent him getting one, but if there is one great K or D that should go off this week. You could try and outbid him on that player (or D) to block him from getting him. Look at his QB situation especially, 6 of the 32 starting QBs are sitting at home this week. He may not have a starter on his team, if this is the case he needs to go get one from the waiver wire. At the best you can make him bid higher by letting him know you intend to bid big on the one obvious waiver wire QB that is free. All of these tips help you get a small edge on your weekly opponent, and bye weeks make this even easier because weaknesses are blatantly obvious in some cases (Flacco on a bye and Vick banged up).
