Draft Terms Explained

I have many emails asking about the different names for drafts. I decided to try and decode them for you with this blog post.

 Redraft-a league where every year the entire league is drafted again. In this type of league there are no keepers held over from the previous season.

 Auction-this type of draft involves owners bidding from a budget on each player. The highest bidder wins the player and that teams auction budget is reduced by the winning bid. Every team starts with the same budget (often $100 or $200 of fantasy money)

 Dynasty-this is a league where the vast majority of players are kept from the previous season. Often every player is kept and they are only dropped when an owner adds a rookie or another player from the new seasons draft.

 Keeper-this league keeps some players (unlike a redraft league). Often it will be a small amount that can be kept (also called a minimal keeper league). In many cases in order to keep a player an owner may have to pay a draft penalty-forfeit a draft pick a few rounds higher than where the player was drafted the year before.

 IDP-Individual Defensive Player leagues use defensive players instead of a defense/special teams. So instead of drafting GB Def you might draft a 2 DL and 3 LB and 2 DB. 

 PPR-this is a league that awards a point for each catch made by a player. It serves to help WRs and TEs to some degree and pass catching RBs. Some leagues give TEs more PPRs (FFPC awards 1.5 PPR for TEs;)

 Draft and Forget-this is a league where owners only draft but do not get to trade, add/drop or set lineups. Instead the computer will set their lineups after the fact in order to give them the maximum points each week. However, owners are stuck with the exact team of the draft each week. Many say this is an easy league since no actions are required after the draft. Hence the name draft and forget. Different contests call these leagues different names:

Draft Champions-National Fantasy Football Championship (NFFC)
Draft Experts-Fantasy Football Players Championship (FFPC)
Draft N Go-Fantasy Football World Championship (FFWC)
Draft Master-other contests
