So who really won?
Tennessee’s Chris Johnson ran away with the 2009 FSWA fantasy football most valuable player award, claiming 85 percent of all first place votes cast. The second-year back rushed for 2,006 yards and found the end zone 16 times for fantasy owners. He was my first choice on the ballot as a voting member of the Fantasy Sports Writers Association (http://www.fswa.org/).
Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers finished second, followed by Baltimore’s Ray Rice, New Orleans’ Drew Brees and Jacksonville’s Maurice Jones-Drew. Exactly as I voted!
Carolina running back DeAngelo Williams won the award in 2009; New England quarterback Tom Brady won it in 2008.
In fantasy football rookie of the year voting, Minnesota’s Percy Harvin claimed 56 percent of the first place ballots but barely edged Denver’s Knowshon Moreno in the final voting. Chris Wells of Arizona finished third, followed by Indianapolis’ Austin Collie and the Giants’ Hakeem Nicks.
I gave Chris Wells the nod because his numbers were about the same as Harvin's and Moreno's but Beanie really rewarded the FF owner with a great playoff stretch. But any of the three deserves the ROY.
The first annual FSWA all-fantasy team was competitive at running back and tight end. Only one vote separated Dallas Clark and Vernon Davis (my vote I am sure!), while split voting for Ray Rice and Maurice Jones-Drew allowed Adrian Peterson to crack the first team.
My ballot was a mirror image except I took Wes Welker over Miles Austin. I think too many writers forgot about the great season Welker had because of his season ending injury in the last game. In fact, he missed 2 entire games and still was the #2 WR behind AJ (at least in PPR leagues). Too many writers are thinking straight performance league rules I am sure.
QB Aaron Rodgers, Packers
RB Chris Johnson, Titans
RB Adrian Peterson, Vikings
WR Andre Johnson, Texans
WR Miles Austin, Cowboys
TE Dallas Clark, Colts
K Nate Kaeding, Chargers
Outstanding Team Defense – New York Jets
Outstanding IDP – Patrick Willis, 49ers
I voted for SF instead of NYJ but now that I look at it maybe their 3 Def TDs against STL skewed there #2 ranking FP wise. In that case NO Def would get my vote FP wise, not NYJ who were a great defense but not Fantasy Points wise (more like 5th).
