Fantasy Football Tip #213 Free Agent Bidding

After the season starts many leagues allow each owner to have a $1000 free agent acquisition budget (FAAB). Owners use their FAAB to bid on players not on other teams (i.e available) that they want to add to their own team. These free agents can be used to fill a bye week replacement, substitute for an injured player or simply improve a weak area on your team.

One thing to watch for is an opponent who has a player hurt for the week you play them. For example, your opponent learns on Wed that his stud TE is out for 2 weeks due to a suspension. Now he may be considering adding the TE who plays for his suspended player. (Example, Chris Cooley out Fred Davis now starts or Dallas Clark out, Jacob Tamme now plays). If it is late in the season and you have some FAAB to burn you may want to see how much $ he has left and OUTBID his maximum possible by $1. That way he cannot get the good replacement that is a sure thing. Something to think about when "blocking" an opponent.
Even if you do not win the player at least you have guaranteed that your opponent does not have him against you this week. If you do win the bid you might have the luxury of using him against your opponent. That is a sweet hit my friend.
