Fantasy Index Magazine "Ask the Expert" Question: Pick one currently struggling star who will be significantly better the rest of the season, and why.

Pick one currently struggling star who will be significantly better the rest of the season, and why.

Andre Johnson is the 14th ranked WR in most PPR leagues due to a weak week 1 and 3 and an injury induced goose egg in week 4. Now his ankle seems fine. Look for big points this week and for the rest of the year as he returns to form and the #1 ranking.

Week 7 for FFGuidebook.com. 5 and 2

Here is my week in review:

Seven major fantasy football leagues for me this year:

Three are Expert leagues. Two of those Expert leagues are associated with my rankings, projections and mock drafts in Fantasy Football Index magazine and Fantasy Football Pro Forecast magazine. The other is the now annual FFPC Pro's vs Joes Challenge. The Fantasy Index Expert Auction and FFPC Pro's vs Joes are also Draft Masters format so draft and forget.

Of the four remaining money leagues, one is the Fantasy Football Players Championship Main Event, two are FootballGuys Players Championship teams and the last is my local league.

Week 7 Results: Wins are in BOLD
Fantasy Index Expert Auction-Draft Masters: WIN, 9-2 versus all the other teams. 4th place overall but a long way from first.
FFPC Pros vs. Joes League #7 - Charles Jefferson's Z-28's: Loss, went 5-6 ( we play every team each week), 8th overall and just treading water. Injury to Ryan Grant and Jake Delhommes struggles drag this no transaction team down.

Fantasy Football Pro Forecast Expert League-Win now 5-2

FFPC Main Event "Clark W. Griswold" Saturday Online League #21: Win now 4-3 (6th overall)

FPC Satellitte Sunday 09.05.7: WIN, 4-3 for year (4th overall)

FPC Satellite Tuesday 09.07.10h: Loss, 4-3 (10th overall)

Local League: WIN, 5-2

Overall 5-2 (4-1 in H2H leagues). For the season, 30-19

Ask the Expert: Would you rather have a go-to, featured guy on a lesser offense, or more of a committee RB or No. 2 WR type on a high-powered offense?

Philosophical question: Would you rather have a go-to, featured guy on a lesser offense, or more of a committee back or No. 2 WR type on a high-powered offense?

It depends on the league format. In H2H leagues I will take the go-to, featured guy on a lesser offense since there is no doubt he will get the touches. In the NFL it is all about skill and opportunity. The go-to player will always get his chances during the game. It might be carries to run out the clock or garbage catches against a prevent defense when his team is well behind. But those opportunities go to the featured player. A player in a running back by committee (RBBC) approach or the #2 WR will be less consistent. They may score the same as a go-to guy from a lesser team over the year, but it will be filled with goose eggs and a few high scoring games. Give me a consistent FF player in a H2H league. On the other hand in a total points or draft masters league, the high risk/high reward player takes on a bigger role on my cheat sheet.

Fantasy Index Magazine "Ask the Expert" Question: Have the numerous injuries to quarterbacks so far this season caused a strategy adjustment?

Have the numerous injuries (including concussions) to quarterbacks so far this season caused to adjust your strategy regarding the position for future seasons?

No. I use one of two main QB strategies. The first is a great QB and no backup. I avoided Aaron Rodgers this year precisely because of the GB O Line, instead drafting either Peyton Manning or Drew Brees if they fell enough in the draft. In this scenario, I felt like neither QB should have major risks due to their protection and so I do not have another QB if they get hurt. So far, so good. By not drafting a backup QB who would only be used except on their bye, I free up roster space for the extra RB or WR sleeper (Ben Jarvis Green or Brandon Lloyd). I grab a free agent QB two weeks before their bye.

The other strategy (default if no great QB available cheaply) was to wait on QB and draft two mid round QBs (usually the 12th and 13th QB drafted). This year that was Matt Ryan, Donovan McNabb or Joe Flacco. With two decent QBs I have an option in case one of them is out for a week with a concussion.

Extra Points Week 6

Some random thoughts/musings of things sports related. Please forgive me in advance for my rants.

Is it just me or does IND seem to have the 2 minute drill down to an art. Every time they run it, the receiver of a Manning catch always immediately jumps up and ... goes directly to the official and hands them the ball. Then they rush back to the line of scrimmage. Other teams however, seem to lose control when they run the 2 minute drill. Receivers seem so happy at an apparently unexpected catch that they feel obligated to run forward and make a first down gesture or pound their chest-all the while wasting valuable time off the clock. IND does it right, everyone else seems to be show boating and not doing it right.

What is up with the Jets clock management in the MNF game? They gave the ball back to the vikes with 2:03 left when a little game clock management like letting it go down to :01 second before hiking the ball on 3rd down (an incomplete pass no less) would have meant MIN got the ball after the 2 minute warning. Hmmmm

Since when does the World Series have a chance to play games in NOVEMBER? If needed game 7 of the NLCS is scheduled for Sunday Oct 24.

That means games 5, 6 and 7 (if needed) of the WS will be in Nov in that scenario.
Game 5 Mon Nov 1
Game 6 Wed Nov 3
Game 7 Thurs Nov 4

Week 5 Results for FFGuidebook.com in fantasy football leagues

7-0 for the 2nd time in four weeks. I like it! Week 6 is critical though as most of the money leagues use a 11-week season. So you really need to be 4-2 or better after 6 weeks because with only 5 games left you cannot afford to be 2-4 or worse as there just is not enough time to make up the difference between you at 2-4 and the other teams at 6-0, 5-1 and 4-2.

Of course, in the FFPC and FPC the 2 highest scoring teams also make the playoffs so even with a terrible record if your Total Points scored is high enough you have a shot to make the playoffs that way.

I am wrapped up in last minute changes to Fantasy Baseball for Beginners which comes out in a few weeks. So unfortuantely I have not blogged enough FF stuff recently. Here is a picture of the next books cover and below some Week 5 fantasy football info.
Trades:
Randy Moss goes from NE to MIN-Brett Favres value goes up, AP too since the 8 man fronts may be less likely now, watch for J Edelman or Brandon Tate or both to step up in NE
Marshawn Lynch goes from BUF to SEA-Fred Jackson assumes role of starting RB and Leon Washingtons hopes of starting in SEA seem to be fading with Lynch and Forsett in line in front of him.
OUT
Jay Cutler CHI QB
Fred Taylor NE RB
Clinton Portis WAS RB (out 4-6 weeks, did not look good, may be time to cut bait on him and run)
Darren McFadden OAK RB (my workhorse is some leagues will sit this week out-Look for a big game from Michael Bush now that he gets to shine)
Steve Smith-CAR WR
Not Expected to Play
Lesean McCoy-PHI RB
Donald Brown-IND RB
Game Time Decisions
Andre Johnson-HOU WR-at least it is a 1PM game.

Fantasy Index Magazine "Ask the Expert" Question: Name one lesser-known player who you think will take advantage of an injury to be a fantasy pickup?

Injuries appear to be rampant around the league. Name one lesser-known player who you think will take advantage of an injury to be a solid fantasy performer over the next few weeks.

Ryan Torrain, RB WAS. I picked him up last week in several leagues. Clinton Portis was dinged up going into week 4 and now it looks as if he will not play in week 5 (awaiting MRI results). He has a recent history (last four years) of wearing down or injuries in the last half of the season. Perhaps that trend starts a little earlier this year or the 29 year old has just taken to many bruising hits. I see the Redskins moving on with Torrain and Mike Sellers as a possible goal line vulture. Torrain has his own injury demons to battle, not to mention any RB in a Mike Shanahan system has to be on pins and needles waiting to see if he is the flavor of the week, but he makes for a great waiver pick up for the season. Another pair could be Kareem Huggins and LaGarrette Blount both with TB. Although they will share time with Caddy Williams, I see Huggins supplanting him and Blount becoming the Mike Alstott of the Buccaneers.
