After the season starts many leagues allow each owner to have a $1000 free agent acquisition budget (FAAB). Owners use their FAAB to bid on players not on other teams (i.e available) that they want to add to their own team. These free agents can be used to fill a bye week replacement, substitute for an injured player or simply improve a weak area on your team.
As you ponder who to drop or if to drop, consider this: the longer the time between your draft and the end of week 1 the more you should have to change a few things (all else being equal). The opposite applies too. If you drafted on the Saturday before the start of the NFL season (i.e 1 day before the Sunday kickoff), you should not need to adjust/change your roster as much than if you drafted a month or more before the season started.
Season ending injuries will need to be corrected and a promising star from the first week may require some add/drops to take a flier on him, but in general remember why you drafted a player and evaluate if one week is really long enough a trial period for them. Don't drop someone just because they did not play in week 1 or had a bad week. Look at matchups, injuries, game plan (did they fall behind early or get out to a huge lead thus changing the way the player was used).
The longer the time between the draft and week 1 the more changes (adds/drops) that should be needed.
