Ask the Expert Question for the week: Which no-name who's excelled in the preseason will have fantasy value at some point this season?

Which no-name who's excelled in the preseason will have fantasy value at some point this season?

Jonathan Dwyer could be the backup RB in Pittsburgh. And the Steelers should run more with big Ben out for 4-6 games. The former Yellowjacket is a power runner who could easily give Rashard Mendenhall much needed competition. He will be the goal-line vulture with plenty of upside. If you are looking for a deep (no-name) sleeper try either of these WRs: Legedu Naanee (SD) or Brian Hartline (MIA). Both are behind a bigger name WR but should see plenty of action.

Ask the Expert Question (from Fantasy Index Magazine):Which NFL rookie have you already decided won't amount to anything in the league?

"Ask the Expert" Question for the Week: Which NFL rookie have you already decided won't amount to anything in the league?Ben Tate. Next question. OK, how about Sam Bradford STL QB. Not only do rookie QBs under whelm in their first year, but the Rams OL is a shambles. Bradford is not set up for success. Bradford went 6-13 for 57 yards plus 4 sacks and a fumble this week. Add the fact that he may not be the starter week 1 (I think he will start then or shortly thereafter) and you have a recipe for disappointment.

Buffalo Wild Wings is my favorite sports bar/draft location

I know I have pimped them here before (and in all three books) but I really do like Buffalo Wild Wings restaurants as a great place to watch sports and football or have your fantasy football draft. Don't get me wrong, there are tons of great sports bars out there. I just happen to live (ok visit family) in Lynchburg Virginia and I always make it a point to visit our local BWW. The waitresses are cute as heck, the TV screens are huge and... they have those trivia games you play by remote control and I kick my sisters rear every time we play-which is fun!

Seriously though every year BWW sponsors FF leagues with a $100 "signing bonus" in the form of free food. How great is that!

Check out your local BWW. I love their boneless wings and Thursday nights they have specials on boneless wings so Thurs Sep 12 I will be there watching my vikes beat NO behind the QB skills of none other than Brett Favre.

Fantasy Football thoughts from preseason week 1

Ben Tate appears out for the season
Arian Foster is the #1 RB at Hou now (see above). Steve Slatons fumble in the end zone seals his fate in my mind.

Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning seem like top QBs. Drew Brees has a Super Bowl hangover.
Philip Rivers will not be as bad as everyone thinks without Vincent Jackson. He has other WR options.

Ryan Grant suffered a concussion and will not play the rest of the preseason-worrying, as I liked Grant this year. Brandon Jackson is a must HC to Grant.

Speakng of Handcuffs if you draft Kolb you must get Michael Vick as your QB3. He could be just as good if he gets the chance to start.

Fred Jackson RB BUF is out for 4-6 weeks. Jackson is 29 yrs old and Marshawn Lynch is 24. Lynch is a sneaky deep sleeper.

Mike Sims Walker is inury prone and does terrible on the road
Andre Johnson HOU WR looks great
I am downgrading Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston as I think Matt Leinart is going to get them killed this year. By the way Breaston will not return punts now that he is AZ WR2.

NE DEF takes a hit with loss of DE T. Warren

Derrick Ward TB RB-sleeper

Get J Edelman WR NE as late sleeper just in case Wes Welker has a relapse. Consider it insurance.

I am not buying the Thomas Jones or Tim Hightower is the starter hype.

Ask the Expert Question (from Fantasy Index Magazine):Would you prefer an 18-game schedule with 2 preseason games, or the current 16-4 split?

Fantasy Football Index Magazine "Ask the Expert" Question for the Week: Would you prefer an 18-game schedule with 2 preseason games, or the current 16-4 split?

Let’s be clear up front. This is all about greed. A longer regular season means more money for everyone. And from a fantasy football perspective I am just as greedy as the next person. I want 2 more real games. Sure it leads to more injuries which mean the best team may be the healthiest team not necessarily the best team. This could also lead to more players taking the last few games off. Some will say what about the records? 2,000 yards rushing -- no problem. 5,000 yards passing -- broken. But we said the same thing with the change from 14 to 16 games (in 1977) and the NFL changes rules so often the “halo” of the records is a little brittle anyway. A better question is what will the 18-game seasons mean to FF? More 16-team leagues with 15-game regular seasons or 14-team leagues with 13-game regular seasons and an increase to the semifinal and Super Bowl from 1 to 2 games each. Labor Day as the kickoff weekend; call me greedy and Vegas here I come.

Ask the Expert Question (from Fantasy Index Magazine): Which player rehabbing from surgery or a preseason injury is on your "do not draft" list

Fantasy Football Index Magazine "Ask the Expert" Question for the Week: Which player rehabbing from surgery or a preseason injury has you putting that player on your "do not draft" list?

Rule #1 Never rule out a player categorically; I will draft anyone if they fall in the draft far enough. Having said that, I drafted Brett Favre in a draft Saturday and regretted it the second I said it. Brett’s own words keep haunting me, “Maybe it (ankle) never gets to where I want it to be. 40 years old...three surgeries...that's all you need to know." So if I had to pick one player with a “Do Not Draft” note potentially by his name it would be old man Favre. I honestly think he will play in 2010, but not at the level of his career year last year. Maybe the current scare will send him down the rankings enough for him to be value again. I would draft him, just not at QB9.

Draft analysis from local League drafted Saturday 31 July

I drafted in my local league this Saturday. It is a minimal Keeper League where you can keep two players from the previous year if you held them the entire year and then only if you pay a 4 round “keeper” penalty. Only players drafted in the 9th round or later are eligible for Keeper status. Once a player is kept he can be kept until the 1st round but then the following year cannot be kept.

So essentially it is a small keeper league where having the foresight to draft potentially great players pays off in the long run. I drafted Chris Johnson in the 15th round in 2008 and LeSean McCoy in the 15th round last year, so I am keeping them and give up a 7th (11th in 2009) and 11th round pick to do so.

It is a PPR league with fairly standard scoring (4 pts PTD, 6 pts Ru/Rec TD, 1 pt per 10 Ru/Rec Yards/20 Pa Yds, 1 PPR). The starters are 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 Kicker, 1 DEF/ST and 1 Flex (Either RB/WR/TE). It is a 14 team league.

However, in order to keep the draft easier for new owners we have mandatory roster requirements for the main draft (2 QB/3RB/3WR/2TE/2K/2DEF/ST) and then have a supplemental draft where any owner can get 4 additional players at any position. So the Main Draft is 14 rounds and you have to have 2 QB/3RB/3WR/2TE/2K/ and 2 DEF/ST at the end.

Here is my team and some thoughts:

Slams Slammers
Round (Pick) Player Position

1. (9) Andre Johnson WR -Best WR in the league
2. (20) Marques Colston WR -Best WR left in the 2nd round
3. (37) Knowshon Moreno RB -Already had 2 great keeper RBs this would be my flex and 3rd.
4. (48) Vernon Davis TE -Like him as a Top 5 TE after last years breakout.
5. (65) Brett Favre QB -kind of wishing I had not gone with my heart here, Kolb looks better
6. (76) Eli Manning QB -Reality check I just drafted a 40 year old in round 5. RECOVER
7. (93) Chris Johnson RB -keeper from 2008
8. (104) New York DEF -Kickers suck so get the best DEF, hint waiting on WR3 til last round because most other teams have their maximum 3 WRs at this stage. The longer I wait the better keeper he could be in 2011.
9. (121) John Carlson TE -I like him as the last of my top 14 TEs.
10. (132) Baltimore DEF -2nd best DEFENSE. I have cornered the DEF market-not too many times you can say that. Only because it is a max limit on positions.
11. (149) LeSean McCoy RB -keeper from 2009
12. (160) Steve Hauschka K -Is this guy really gonna start for the Falcons?
13. (177) Graham Gano K -RECOVER from my 12th rounder may not be a starter.
14. (188) Dez Bryant WR -Setting my team up for a great keeper pick in 2011 (if so he will be a 10th round keeper)
15. (205) Carnell Williams RB -Could easily be the starter at TB. 14 x 3=42 other RBS off board by now. I wanted CJ Spiller who went a spot earlier. RATS
16. (216) Michael Bush RB -Another potential starter
17. (233) Jabar Gaffney WR -I could not believe he was not taken earlier
18. (244) Anthony Gonzalez WR -High risk/high reward. Just like I like my sleeper WRs.

Brett Favre not coming back to NFL!

I knew this would happen, since I drafted him Saturday in my local league. Looks like Brett Favre will not be coming back for his 20th season. The AP says that a person close to the situation says that Favre has informed the Vikings he will not return for his 20th season.

I am still holding on to him until I see week 1 go by and no Brett.

Although I predicted it in Fantasy Football Index magazine this year I am sad to hear it all the same.

Ask the Expert Question (from Fantasy Index Magazine): Which training camp battle will you be paying the most attention to this preseason?

Fantasy Football Index Magazine "Ask the Expert" Question for the Week: Which training camp battle will you be paying the most attention to this preseason?

Most will say C.J Spiller and Fred Jackson at RB in BUF. However, while the QB and RB situations in BUF (and CLE) are tempting, I am most interested in the RB battle in SEA. Justin Forsett seems to be the early favorite, but Leon Washington has the “right stuff” if he can recover from knee surgery. He is explosive and has a 4.8 YPC average in his four short years in the NFL. Now that he finally has moved away from the Thomas Jones shadow, he is sure to want to prove that the highest paid RB in SEA ($2.45 million) is worth it. And this is one battle that could last all preseason with the winner getting a ton of carries in a Pete Carroll offensive juggernaut.
