Congratulations to Scott Sachs of Perfect Season Fantasy Football. He’s the winner of the 2012 Fantasy Index Experts Poll.
This is the competition between 20 fantasy analysts. They submit their top 20 at each position, then we grade each of those choices, giving more credit to players ranked higher. Put a guy number one, and his production counts a lot towards your score. Rank him 20th, and he doesn’t count so much.
Each analyst ranks 120 players – 20 each at six different positions – and when the smoke cleared, Sachs finished first. Chris Liss of Rotowire.com took 2nd this year. Alan Satterlee ofDynasty Rogues placed third.
Sachs placed first in the wide receivers, tight ends and kicker categories, building a huge lead. He tailed off at the end, ranking 15th in quarterbacks and 15th in running backs, but still hung on for the win.
Satterlee won the quarterback position, followed by Liss and Bob Henry of Footballguys.
Some of the traditionally strong entries finished well back this year. Scott Pianowski of Yahoo! is a two-time winner. He finished 13th. David Dorey of the Huddle has finished the top 6 six times; he was 16th. Pretzel May of Fantasy Draft Master has finished 1st and 2nd the last two years; he placed 17th.
Scoring changed this year. In the past, we’ve used a sliding 20-1 scale. Rank a guy first, his production gets multiplied by 20; rank him 2nd and it’s 19 and so on. Greg Zuerlein, for example, scored 95 points. Rank him first and you’d get 95 x 20 = 1,900 points. Rank him 2nd and you get 1,805 (19 x 95).
That scoring system, though, makes the highly ranked guys really valuable (maybe too valuable). So we switched to a 30-11 sliding scale this year. Now, the first picks in each category are worth only about three times as much as the last guys. It puts more value on those later-round picks.
But we ran the numbers for the old scoring system as well (just to see how they turned out). Michael Nazarek of Fantasy Football Mastermind and Henry benefited. They finished 4th and 6th, but they would have finished 12th and 16th using the old scoring format.
Tony Holm of Fantasy Sharks and Sam Hendricks of Extra Point Press were hurt by the rules changes. They would have finished 3rd and 5th under the old scoring format, but they placed just 14th and 12th.
There is no perfect way to “score” experts picks, of course. Fantasy football might be as much art as science. Injuries play a huge role; a guy gets hurt in August, then you’re taking a big fat zero at that spot all year. Don’t assume when a analyst here doesn’t rank in the top 5 that he had a bad year or doesn’t know what he’s doing. This is just one way to look at the picks (and, more importantly, it gives these guys incentive to be really careful and realistic when assembling their draft boards for us – they’re trying to win).
The top 11 finishers in this competition win spots in the Fantasy Football Index Mock Draft. Sachs finished first, so he gets his choice of where he would like to select. Then Liss will get to choose any of the remaining 11 slots. That league will also include Darrell Duke of Texas, who won the Fantasy Index Super League a few weeks back (I don’t run the Mock Draft, and I’m not sure which draft slot he’ll get – I’m not sure where they fit him in for the batting order.)
The Experts Poll included a pair of at-large berths. Tom Duggan of Tewksbury, N.J., won the 2011 Fantasy Index Open (the reader version of the Experts Poll), and Mark Burns of Runnemede, N.J., was the runnerup in the 2011 Super League. But they weren’t factors. Duggan finished in 15th; Burns took last.
The magazine proper, Fantasy Football Index, isn’t an official part of the poll. That would create issues (since we’re scoring and managing all the picks). But we do plug in our numbers to see we would have done. We score the selections we printed on the Cheat Sheet (page 35) in the magazine.
In comparision to the 20 analysts, we would have ranked 4th this year. We would have won the quarterbacks position (we were high on RG3 and Luck), but ranked 13th in RB, 11th in WR, 5th in TE, 8th in kickers and 12th in defenses.
